The magic of Etsy is that you can order one of a kind, handmade pieces of jewelry (among other things) right from the artisans who made them. But why not go a step further and talk to the sellers themselves? I tracked down my favorite Etsy seller, Nancy Salz, who is a Berkeley-based artist, to talk about what inspired the gorgeous necklaces she makes herself.  Nancy is my college roommate Caroline’s mom, who not only is the coolest mom I know but also is ridiculously talented. In college, people would constantly stop Caroline, on the streets of NYC and demand, “Where did you get that necklace?!” It was always a Nancy Salz creation.

I was thrilled to hear she’s selling her jewelry on Etsy so all of us can get a piece of her gorgeousness. Before the DIY (do-it-yourself) movement swept the internet, Nancy Salz was creating vintage assemblage, silver jewelry and textiles in her hometown of Berkeley, CA. But that’s not all: she’s also a painter and collage artist. While Salz’s jewelry is sold in local boutiques such as Lilith, Dish, A La Folie and Erica Tanov, her creativity also seeps into her colorful, vintage-filled home  Apartment Therapy recently featured and dubbed  “one of the most colorful and festive homes in Berkeley, California.”  After the jump, Nancy shares the stories behind each of our favorite necklaces. Grab one now on Etsy while they’re still available!
