It should go without saying that oral hygiene is an important part of your everyday routine. Let’s be honest: having a nice, white smile can really boost your confidence. More importantly, though, oral health issues like cavities, gingivitis and tooth pain are no fun.

If you don’t have a dentist you love, you’re in luck. We sat down with Dr. Elisa Mello, co-founder of NYC Smile Design, to share her answers to four commonly asked dental questions.

SheFinds: How can I whiten my teeth naturally?

Dr. Elisa Mello: Brushing with crushed strawberries mixed with a small amount of baking soda helps to remove stains and brighten teeth.  This can safely be done 1-2 times per month. Rinsing your mouth with hydrogen peroxide each night also helps to remove daily stains.

SF: What’s the best toothpaste to use?

EM: Look for a toothpaste that has minimal ingredients and chemicals, and has a higher pH (less acidic) level. We are currently using Redmond Earth Paste; it contains no glycerin, fluoride, foaming agents or artificial coloring.

SF: How should I care for my toothbrush?

EM: It is best to replace manual nylon toothbrushes every 2-3 months and electric toothbrush heads every 4-6 months. Always let your toothbrush air dry; never put a wet toothbrush in a plastic container.

SF: How can I protect my teeth from coffee stains?

EM: Simply rinsing immediately after with water helps to neutralize the pH. Also, having some milk in your coffee can help to reduce staining as well.
