Once upon a time, plaid pants reminded us exclusively of pajamas–or at best, elementary school uniforms. This season, the casual print does a complete 180, and, with a little styling, proves it can effortlessly transition from the bedroom to the school room, board room, and VIP room at this year’s holiday parties!

The real conundrum remains: how should you wear plaid pants without them looking sloppy or unflattering? We’ve got you: just follow these three easy steps:

1) Pick a slim-fitting pant. Although these mimic sweats in print, they should be fitted well around your rear and legs.

2) Pair with heels. These will extend your legs and play up the fancy factor.

3) Tuck in a sexy top. Whether it’s a sheer v-neck, or a silk tanktop, or a sparkly sheath, make sure your top is feminine and tucked in. This will ensure your pants emulate trousers, rather than PJs.

4) Add a piece of statement bling. A plaid print is loud, so don’t go overboard–but we love the way this looks topped off with a sparkly collar necklace!
