Week In Review: Two-Tone Hair Abounds, W Magazine Invents A New, Hard Way To Shop, And More

two tone hair becomes a trend

Must-Reads:

Just in time for Halloween, two-tone hair crests the first wave of a trend.  We’ve got the tips on how to get it right, if you must indulge the look.

W magazine proved to us that print publications really just march to their own drummers these days.  They’ve come up with a simple, mere five-stop process for you to shop their pages in 2010.

Saks, however, is on a more relevant track, having begun to add private online flash sales to its repertoire.

Sales & Deals:

Take 55% off Frye boots and shoes at 6pm

Save up to 60% off on warm winter coats from Lord & Taylor

Take up to 70% off versatile dresses from New York & Co.

Taste Tests:

Which zipped bag is the more practical purchase?

Which silver flats are a flat-out bargain?

Guides To Check Out:

This week, we’re excited to abandon old wives’ rules and wear our white jeans straight through fall.  After all, they look great paired with an eco-friendly grocery tote and accessorized with autumn-appropriate fingerless gloves.

Lara Stone To Be The New Creepy, Irridescent Face of Louis Vuitton?

Lara StoneMadonna for Louis Vuitton

WWD just reported the rumor that Dutch model Lara Stone will take over for Madonna as the face of Louis Vuitton. The Queen of Pop looked a tad ghoulish in her recent LV campaigns, if you ask me, so maybe it’s best they move on to a new look.  But could the choice of Stone, who’s famous for being a size six (oh my) have anything to do with all the bruhaha over too-thin runway models and Brigitte’s announcement that it will now feature real women? Who knows, but either way, we dig Stone’s sultry style.

KAIN long sleeve pocket teebdg knit skirt

You may not be able to get Lara’s bod with just the click of your mouse, but you can certainly get her look with BDG’s knit skirt and this sheer long sleeve pocket tee. As for Madonna’s Vuitton ensemble, we’ll leave the animal ears to the Olsen twins.

Not into these picks? We’ve got more mini skirts to choose from and while you’re at it, pick out a fun pair of high heeled boots.

Skulls And Fashion – A Match Made In Heaven, Or Hell

alexander mcqueen knuckle dusterskulls pervade fashion

Appropriately enough, today Slate ran a slideshow run-down on the history of skulls in fashion.  Once scary, then edgy, and now solidly entrenched in the chic mainstream, the look is everywhere.  Evidence of that fact is Alexander McQueen’s knuckle duster, which is priced well over a grand, yet somehow still sold out everywhere in black (however, you can join the waitlist for more at Net-a-Porter).  Luckily it’s still around in bright girly pink.

Alexander McQueen skull print scarfWilliam Rast skull tank

Let’s keep our cranial indulgence to a reasonable quotient.  This skull-print scarf is less of an investment than McQueen’s clutch bag, but still lets you get your fix of both the designer and the look.  And William Rast’s skull tank presents a whimsical, almost cheerful version of the image.  Of course, skulls are often best presented in 3-D, which is why we’ve got a few different macabre jewelry options for you to get the style.

In case you want to sport skull-less scarves and tanks, don’t worry; we’ve got you covered on that front, too.

Project Runway: Designers Get Inspiration From…Other Designers

Using their previous winning looks as inspiration, the six remaining designers in episode 11 of Project Runway had to come up with complementary looks that matched their originals’ style.

pr_ep11_christopher

It’s been a few weeks since Christopher designed anything the judges liked, and his ball gown with flower appliques was no exception.

pr_ep11_carolhannah

Carol Hannah thought about designing something besides a dress, but why mess with a good thing? Her cute cocktail look with pockets wasn’t as glamorous as her Bob Mackey-inspired gown, but the judges didn’t notice.

pr_ep11_gordana

After the success of her Park Avenue edgy cocktail dress, Gordana tried to translate edgy into a sleek upscale outfit, but failed miserably.

pr_ep11_logan

So it’s a good thing for her that Logan turned up the volume way too high. The irony for him is that zipper-gate (where Althea passive-aggressively accused him of stealing her collar idea) was basically what sent him home.

pr_ep11_irina

And despite Irina accusing Althea – on the runway – of copying her over-sized sweater design, “Meana Irina” got her comeuppance by creating a “beautiful” brocade dress, but losing out to Althea.

pr_ep11_althea

Borrowing the paper bag element of her winning skirt, Althea created impeccably crafted pants, topped with a sexy tank and a cozy cocoon cardigan.

silencenoise_papertrouserellamoss_cocooncardigan

Judges unanimously loved Althea’s outfit. While the slim pants have a lot of volume near the waist and might not work for every body, they’re a nice alternative to leggings. These Silence & Noise Paper Bag Trousers fit the bill, but won’t break your budget. There’s no shortage of cocoon-style cardigans with kimono sleeves, but this Ella Moss Striped Ollie Cardigan has a pretty  silhouette and a belt to keep it from looking sloppy.

Score more of this week’s favorite styles with cardigans, cocktail dresses, and harem pants.

News: Michael Kors Will Be Doing Your Makeup, Victoria Beckham May Design Handbags, And More

Michael Kors to create cosmetics with Estee Lauder

1. Looks like Tom Ford doesn’t have Estée Lauder on lockdown – the company is also joining forces with Michael Kors, to expand his Very Hollywood fragrance into a cosmetics range that will debut in January.  We wonder how the different mascaras will stack up against each other? [WWD]

2. Victoria Beckham may be adding handbags and shoes to her dresses line, VB.  The skinny star’s clothing might be accepted in the fashion world, but we’ll stick with our favorite designer handbags, for now.  [Elle UK]

3. Balenciaga will be re-introducing fragrance, beginning with Balenciaga Paris in February 2010.  That might be too long to wait, so peruse our fragrance guide in the meantime.  [WWD]

4. The Guardian wants you to forgo naughty witchery this year and has advice on Halloween costumes they deem smart.  However, it’s not such a problem to go edgy with a slutty costume that’s also pretty funny.  [Guardian]

We Didn’t Think It Was Possible, But W Magazine Manages To Make Online Shopping Hard

WWD reports that the bright minds at W (those who didn’t get laid off this week, that is) have hatched a plan to revive the struggling fashion magazine. In 2010, they’ll release two themed issues, one of which will be “100 percent shop-able.”

w magazine november issue

Here’s W’s brilliant plan:

1. Everything in the book is for sale

2. The reader takes a photo of the page with the item they want

3. They upload it to their computer

4. Then they email it to the magazine

5. Next, the happy shopper receives an email with a link to buy.

If you’re wondering what the folks at W are smoking, so are we. The magazine industry really is behind the times if they think this is an easier way to shop.

tory burch dressralph lauren faux fur jacket

Personally, I’d be embarrassed to take a photo of a magazine, even if I was alone. So, let’s take W’s shopping game for a test run, shall we? Here are two magazine-worthy items we love, a gorgeous cheetah print sheath by Tory Burch and a luscious faux fur jacket from Lauren by Ralph Lauren. Will you be whipping out your camera to take a snapshot of your computer screen? Somehow we think not.

Luckily, in 2009, buying is actually as easy as clicking your mouse, so score autumn trends by clicking away at our guides to the best wrap dresses, faux fur, and fall shoes.

Saks Joins The Flasher Crowd

Saks FashionFIx flash sales

Saks Fifth Avenue wants to keep up with the times, and one way to do that is to get in on the flash sale action, à la Gilt, Rue La La, and many other online sample sale sites.  The department store giant held its first private online sales event, called “FashionFix,” which was accessible only through Saks’ email newsletter (you can sign up at the bottom of Saks’ homepage).

Quickie online designer sales seem to be getting billed as the wave of the shopping future.  We love anything that gets us handbags and denim at a steal of a price, so we certainly hope the trend keeps up.  In the meantime, be sure to check all your favorite online sample sale haunts on a regular basis in order not to miss anything – these deals often disappear in the blink of an eye.
