If you struggle with thinning hair, you may have tried a number of products to solve the issue, from supplements to diet changes to scalp treatments. The best way to stop hair loss will depend on the problem at hand, so it can take a good amount of trial and error—and at the end of the day, there’s no miracle cure that will help your hair grow back overnight. Luckily, though, that doesn’t mean your confidence has to suffer too much in the meantime! Even though stopping hair loss may take some time, there are plenty of styling hacks that can help you boost volume, look your best, and feel great about yourself and your locks.
To discover some of the best ways to style thinning hair to create the illusion of volume, we spoke to Las Vegas-based hair stylist Cindy Marcus of Latest Hairstyles. She shared two of her go-to methods when helping clients combat and conceal their hair loss—the best part is that you can try them out for yourself, right at home!
Blow-dry Everything Back
Marcus says utilizing the power of a blow-dryer can be a total game-changer when it comes to adding volume to your hair. It's all about how you use it. "A hack I have taught clients is with the way they blow dry," she says. So, what's her secret? It turns out all you have to is blow dry all of your hair back, including the hair on the top and sides of your head, rather than blow-drying on a part. She says this will "create volume at the root and train the hair to have that lift," whereas drying on a part can have a flattening effect. "If the hair at the root is dried in an upward motion it tends to stay in that position," she explains. That means when you use this method, you'll have long-lasting volume at the roots, and your hair will look fuller than ever. Love it!
There's one more word of advice Marcus offers when it comes to this hack: add a few extra products to the mix. "I recommend using a volume spray at the root and a volumizing mousse on
the ends," she instructs, noting that these products will add extra hold for even even longer-lasting volume at both your roots and your ends.
Curl and Tease
Sometimes all thinning hair needs for a bit of a volume boost is the right style to pump it up. Luckily, Marcus has one fail-proof method on her side. "When all else fails, there is always the age old method of curling iron and teasing," she says. That sounds simple enough! For a great volumizing method, just curl your hair all over with a large barrel curling iron (Marcus says anything one inch or larger will work, depending on how long your hair is) and tease it a bit at the roots.
If you aren't a big fan of curls, don't fret. Marcus says you can simply brush your hair out after teasing it. You'll still reap all the voluminous benefits. What a great trick! The final step is using a hair spray to hold it all together. Using the right product here is crucial; Marcus urgers readers to go with a volumizing hair spray option, which is "lighter than most other sprays and will not cause the hair to collapse." Noted!
Of course, in the long run, what you really want is to stop thinning hair at the source. Marcus recommends trying supplements like Biotin and speaking to a physician to figure out the best way to make your own hair as thick and healthy as possible. But next time you're pressed for time and want to create the illusion of volume ASAP, these hair hacks are a great place to start!
