When it comes to classic, anti-aging haircuts, few things are as tried and true as a timeless bob. This length helps to add volume, lifts your face, and still leaves room for some fun and flirty styling. However, not all bobs are created equally; just as with any other haircut, there are several ways to go wrong with this style that could actually add years to your look, rather than doing the opposite. Luckily, we’ve got your back with some expert advice.

To learn about a few of the bob mistakes you should avoid if you want to look younger, we spoke to LA-based celebrity hairstylist Cody Renegar and stylish Lauren Udoh of Wig Reports. Together, they pointed out three pitfalls every woman should steer clear of: choosing the wrong length, leaving layers out of the picture, and over-styling.

60+ Gift Ideas For Everyone On Your List

1. A Bob That Is Too Long Or Too Short

While the term "bob" generally refers to a short-to-medium length haircut, that leaves a lot of room for interpretation. Renegar says getting the length right is essential if you want to create an anti-aging effect and avoid drawing attention to sagging skin. "The bob must float just above the shoulders, so it doesn't hit your shoulders and flip up," he says. "This will date you." Udoh agrees that a bob that is too long can "make you look dated and severe." We definitely don't want that!

Additionally, Renegar's recommended sweet-spot length (falling just above your shoulders) will allow you to hide any sagging neck skin without getting into that questionable, too-long territory.

2. No Layers Or Volume

When it comes to an anti-aging haircut, it's always important to avoid anything that will accentuate any drooping in your skin. For this reason, adding layers to your bob that can help lift your face is essential. "There needs to be face-framing layers and volume above the cheekbones so as not to drag the face down and look gauntly," Renegar says, adding that "it should be up and away from your face." Udoh agrees that "a layered bob with soft angles that will frame your face and add texture."

For the perfect layers, they should rest just above your cheekbones in order to "draw the eyes upwards and give the illusion of a higher cheekbone," Renegar says. If you really want to shake things up, he also recommends adding bangs to the mix, which will "help shape your face and make you appear much younger." Perfect!

3. Over-Styling

Once your hairdresser completes the job of cutting your hair, your everyday styling routine is in your hands. Udoh says you should avoid over-styling and using too much product at all costs if you want to look younger. "This can make your hair look greasy and weighed down, making you look older," she warns. If you really want to maintain a youthful look and voluminous hair, the best thing to do is "let your natural texture shine through and style with a light hand."

Overall, a bob is a great, timeless haircut that can take years off of your face if you get it right. Just be sure to follow this expert advice, and you'll have a perfect anti-aging 'do that you can rock for years to come!
