Thinning hair is a common beauty issue that can be linked back to several different causes, from nutrient deficiencies to genetics. While there are many products that can help to slow and reverse hair loss, there are also a few helpful tips and tricks you can keep in mind while cutting and styling your hair that will keep your tresses looking full.

To learn more, we spoke to Janine Jarman, celebrity hair stylist and founder of Curl Cult. Jarman gave us the inside scoop on all of the best techniques for creating the illusion of volume when dealing with hair loss.

Choose short styles

One of the best ways to boost volume and keep your hair looking full is to stick with cropped haircuts, such as bobs and pixie cuts. Not only will this highlight all of the gorgeous features on your face, but it will also help to reduce the signs of thinning in your hair. Jarman notes that short cuts "help increase volume," while longer ones may cause your hair to look even thinner. "The longer fine hair gets, the finer it tends to look," she warns.

If you love to keep your locks long, though, don't worry. You still have options. There are plenty of ways to create volume with longer haircuts. A trendy, layered shag, for example, is a perfect choice. However, Jarman says you should steer clear of blunt, single-length styles as much as possible if you don't want to draw attention to the thinness of your hair. "Avoid all one-length looks, as you need layers to help stack density and create volume," she says.

Try bangs

In addition to keeping things short and sweet, Jarman says spicing your hair up with bangs or fringe is another great, volumizing option. There are many different fringe styles to choose from, from the thick, blunt variety to wispy, face-framing curtain bangs. Whichever choice you make, it'll be a great way to conceal signs of thinning.

Jarman explains that bangs "help build volume and density around the face." At the same time, they can keep things covered. "[Fringe] helps hide any visible scalp due to thin hair," she says. Perfect!

Lighter hair, darker roots

Changing your hair color may not be the first thing you think of when you're considering ways to boost volume, but Jarman says the right shade can create the illusion of thicker hair. Who knew!

"A lot of time using bleach, be it for highlighter or all over, helps swell the hair," Jarman points out. She says a lighter color will also "make it have more texture and height." You may just want to make sure you're getting your locks colored by a professional—we all know what chaos can ensue when you take bleach to your own hair!

Additionally, Jarman suggests opting for a darker color on your roots, which can also create a volumizing effect. "Dyeing your roots darker gives the illusion that your hair is thicker," she explains.

At the end of the day, though, the optimal volumizing option will depend on your personal hair type. That's why Jarman says you should always work with a stylist that can assess your needs and determine what works best for you. "Keep your hair healthy and find a stylist you trust to guide you on what look will best support your density limitations," she concludes.
