Have you been disappointed with how your iPhone runs — specifically, how long its battery lasts before conking out? You could be contributing to major battery drainage and other problems with your phone by simply neglecting a few key maintenance steps, or by making a few very common mistakes. You’ll know your phone battery has taken a licking by the way it refuses to hold a charge or contributes to a phone that stalls and takes forever and a day to perform tasks.

The good news is that you can make changes today that will contribute to a stronger and more efficient phone. Start by avoiding these five detrimental iPhone mistakes that are ruining your battery health.

Running Wi-Fi and Bluetooth at All Times

A strong Wi-Fi connection and access to Bluetooth are important for getting the best experience from your phone. But if you are running both at all times while you’re out and simply don’t need them, you are forcing your battery to work harder than it needs to. Select the times you require Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and disable them during those time you don’t need them.

Using a Cheap Charger

Cheap third-party phone chargers may be great for saving money, but they’re not so great at saving your battery for the long-term. These chargers aren’t designed to deliver the exact charge your iPhone needs, and this can negatively impact your device over time. Consider spending a little more for an Apple-certified charger that will maintain the integrity of your phone battery.

Keeping Your Screen Super Bright

A very bright phone screen isn’t usually necessary — you can probably get away with a screen that’s much less bright — plus it is one of the worst battery drainers. Toggle your brightness switch down as low as you can go to conserve energy and battery power.

Keeping Your Phone in Extreme Temperatures

You should never charge your phone in an extremely hot or cold environment, nor should you keep it in these temps for any length of time. Extreme temperatures are bad for your phone battery, and it’s all-too-easy to create these conditions for your phone. Leaving it on a towel exposed to the sun at the beach or forgetting your phone in your car is all it takes sometimes to expose the battery to less-than-ideal conditions.

Keeping Your Phone on the Charger

Once you’ve charged your phone and it has reached between 20 and 80 percent, you can feel free to detach it from the charger and leave it off. If you continuously charge your device, long after it has reached a 100 percent charge, you could be causing damage to your battery.

Avoiding these mistakes is easy — and it will help your phone and its battery last longer.
