Aging is a natural process, but there are many ways to slow it down and maintain youthful, glowing skin. From proper skincare routines to targeted supplementation, these strategies can help protect against signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles. Some “remarkable” ingredients in skincare products promote cell regeneration and hydration, while supplements rich in collagen, vitamins, and omega-3s can nourish the skin from within.

Andrew Huberman from Respire recently shared dermatologist-approved tips on his YouTube channel for slowing down aging and “reducing the degradation of the protein components in the skin” that contribute to its youthful glow. According to experts, niacinamide and retinol are the “powerful” ones to add to your routine. Read to learn more!

1. Niacinamide

“Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3,” Huberman notes, and if taken twice per day at a dosage of 500 mg, “it can increase the production of ceramides, which relate to the lipids in skin that improve the moisture in skin,” which is a key component to youthfulness in the face. Huberman also adds that niacinamide supplementation also appears to balance the level of oil production in the skin. “You need oil down in those pores but not too much," and that it can definitely help "reduce the appearance of clogged pores,” or pores that appear too large.

If that’s not enough, niacinamide supplementation can even “reduce the appearance of accumulation of melanin in a particular spot,” therefore reducing age spots and hyperpigmentation.

If you don’t want to take an oral supplement, you can certainly use topical niacinamide creams or serums. Results work best if taken consistently and paired with hydrolyzed collagen protein with vitamin C.

2. Retinol

Retinols are popular for a reason when it comes to skincare, and the derms that Huberman chatted with explain why.

“Vitamin A gets into skin cells and is converted into something called retinaldehyde, then into something called retinoic acid, “ he explains.

When retinoic acid gets into cells, it activates “transcription factors.” These “bind to DNA and can induce the transcription and translation of DNA into RNA and RNA to protein.”

Basically, this will induce the formation of collagen protein within the skin and other important proteins that will give the look of plump skin while replacing “old, degenerated skin.”

The bottom line

While aging is an inevitable part of life, taking proactive steps can significantly slow down its visible effects and maintain youthful, radiant skin. Adding these derm-approved ingredients like niacinamide and retinol into your skincare routine or supplement regimen can enhance hydration, reduce fine lines, and promote collagen production. With the right combination of care and dedication, achieving and sustaining a youthful glow is well within reach.
