Beauty in Brown was created because the media often leaves brown girls out of the beauty conversation–unless they want to make a diversity statement. As a brown girl who has been writing about beauty, leadership, and politics for years, I always tell women that how you feel in your skin will affect how you feel about many other things in your life. Beauty in Brown will talk about what skincare and beauty products work best for brown women, from the perspective of a brown woman. — Benish Shah, Beauty in Brown Column Writer
Finding the perfect pink lipstick is a major summer goal, especially when our Instagram feeds are filled with bright, bold lip colors. Pink lipsticks have become a major trend this season and I love the vibrant and playful vibes they add to my glam. Going bright-lipped is daunting on its own, but finding the right shade when you’re a brown girl is even harder.
Most makeup artists and beauty experts will advise brown-skinned women to go with a mauve tone or lean towards the orange/pink tones, but finding these exact shades can be hard if you don’t know where to start.
How To Find The Best Shade Of Pink Lipstick For Brown Skin
This may seem like a science at first, but I have a 2-step hack that will help you find the perfect pink shade every single time! When shopping for the pink lipsticks, you need to:
1. Understand Your Skin’s Undertones
Trust us, there’s a pink shade to complement every skin tone. Everyone has different undertones and they play a huge role in how the shade will look. It’s recommended that those with warmer undertones should try warmer pinks like corals, while those with cooler undertones should opt for a true pink. If you have olive undertones, then a deeper pink is the shade for you as it adds warmth to the skin. Those with neutral tones can pull off any shade of pink–lucky!
2. Rock Your Chosen Color With The Utmost Confidence
If understanding the whole undertones thing is too confusing, then I say just go with what you think looks good. Once you’ve found that dreamy, fun and flirty pink shade, I encourage you to rock it with confidence and ignore the rules!

This color is great for brown girls, regardless of undertones. This is my go-to bright pink lip color and I’ve had brown friends of all skin tones borrow this color with excellent results. Amalfi is rich and highly pigmented but doesn’t dry out your lips with its matte formula. It’s important to layer this lip color on to get an even finish for an all-day stay. True to its name, this Stila lip color will last all day, unless you decide to eat something oily.
This color is excellent for brown girls with blue veins/pink undertones. It does a great job of creating a brightening effect on the entire face. This color is not recommended for women with green veins/yellow undertones as it can bring out the yellow in the skin, making the overall look sallow.
Tryst is a great shade for brown girls with green veins/yellow undertones. Pulling in more orange tones under the pink, the color helps balance out yellow undertones to create a bold lip color experience. This formula requires layering, so it’s a good idea to keep the lipstick in your purse so you can reapply it all day.
Wet n Wild’s Catsuit collection is great for trying the bold pink lip before investing in a more expensive version of the lip color. Oh My Dolly packs a truly bright punch for any skin tone. It dries matte and becomes much more manageable as a bold lip.
For a lip color that doesn’t dry matte, Vivid Rose is a great option for most brown girls. It’s a bright color, but does not have the saturation of the matte lipsticks and is good for dipping your foot into the bold lip look.
