Whether you suffer from the occasional breakout or have been battling cystic acne for years, we can all agree that pimples are not a good look. Plus, they can be super painful, too. You should opt for products that contain benzoyl peroxide. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, this ingredient kills bacteria that contributes to blemishes. And when used daily, it can also reduce redness from flare-ups.

Experts say that benzoyl peroxide can even help prescription acne medications work better. In fact, the ingredient has the power to prevent antiobiotic resistance!

Prescription and over-the-counter products can contain anywhere between two and 10 percent of the ingredient. But dermatologists warn that you shouldn't use one with more than 2.5 percent, as these can cause irritation, especially if you have sensitive skin.

As a rule of thumb, you should slowly introduce benzoyl peroxide into your regimen to see how your skin reacts to it. But if all goes well, you may just see your acne clear up in as little as five days!
