It’s only natural that as you grow older your skin will begin to show signs of aging in the form of wrinkles and fine lines. Despite your best efforts, you can create a well-refined skincare routine early in life and still struggle with the aging process, so it’s vital to ensure that all aspects of your lifestyle contribute to your healthiest being.

While a well-rounded diet is necessary for maintaining your physical health as you get older, the food you eat can have a significant impact on your skin as well. Just as foods containing large amounts of sugar or dairy can worsen your appearance over time, there are other ingredients which will actually help to improve your complexion and allow you to maintain a flawless appearance as you age.

While Vitamin C can be applied topically within your skincare routine, eating foods that are rich in this vitamin are going to have the biggest impact in minimizing signs of aging in your appearance. Inessa Fishman, MD, Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon explains, “Vitamin C is a well-studied and important antioxidant, and this helps our immune system (with the skin being an important part of our immune function!). It's a great part of a balanced diet. I often recommend patients take vitamin D and C supplements, especially in the cold and flu seasons, to feel and look one's best.”

Foods that are rich in Vitamin C are going to be valuable additions to your daily routine because they can help to boost collagen production in the skin, protecting you from a sagging complexion. According to Healthline, “Vitamin C can also help fend off the signs of aging because of its vital role in the body’s natural collagen synthesis. It helps to heal damaged skin and, in some cases, reduces the appearance of wrinkles. Adequate vitamin C intake can also help repair and prevent dry skin.”

The easiest way to naturally consume more Vitamin C is by adding citrus fruits into your diet to give your skin and immune system a boost. However, this antioxidant can also be found in a number of other surprising foods, such as broccoli, strawberries, and even spinach or kale. A diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables will naturally bolster your overall health, but your skin can especially benefit from the nutrients included in these superfoods.

It’s important to remember that a healthy diet is particularly necessary as you age to keep you looking as youthful on the outside as you feel on the inside. Choosing foods that contain ample Vitamin C will not only improve your immune system and keep you healthy, but also increase collagen production in your skin, fighting against aging and minimizing the appearance of wrinkles over time.
