Kidney health is crucial for overall well-being, as the kidneys are responsible for filtering waste, balancing fluids, and regulating various bodily functions. However, factors such as poor diet, dehydration, and certain medical conditions can lead to kidney damage or the formation of kidney stones. Fortunately, the right foods can help prevent, manage, and even reverse kidney damage.

Dr. Eric Berg, a medical expert and author, recently shared seven foods you should be eating to “prevent and reverse” kidney damage. According to him, asparagus, celery, and magnesium-rich foods are some of the best choices. Read on to discover all seven.

1. Asparagus

Asparagus is known for its diuretic properties, which help increase urine production and promote frequent urination. This can help flush out toxins and prevent the buildup of waste products.

“It has a certain enzyme that helps to detoxify the kidneys,” Dr. Berg says.

2. Celery

Celery contains compounds that help reduce uric acid levels in the body. High uric acid is a known contributor to the formation of uric kidney stones, and celery’s ability to lower these levels may reduce the risk of developing this type of stone.

“Celery also has things in it to greatly improve kidney function,” says Dr. Berg.

3. Bell peppers

Bell peppers, especially red ones, are packed with antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin A, and carotenoids. These antioxidants help protect the kidneys from oxidative stress and inflammation.

“Bell peppers greatly improve kidney function. They are loaded with vitamin C and a lot of other good nutrients for the kidney," he says.

4. Cabbage

Cabbage, particularly the red cabbage, is also rich in antioxidants such as vitamin C, beta-carotene, and polyphenols. These antioxidants help protect the kidney cells from oxidative stress.

It's also high in fiber and water, which helps the kidneys flush out toxins and waste products through urination.

5. Garlic

Garlic has various benefits for not just your kidneys but for your overall health. They can help regulate blood pressure, reduce uric acid levels, promote detoxification, and have anti-inflammatory properties.

“Garlic is loaded with allicin, which is really good for kidney function,” he notes.

6. Magnesium-rich foods

Magnesium-rich foods play a significant role in preventing and potentially reversing kidney damage and kidney stones due to their ability to support kidney function, regulate electrolyte balance, and reduce inflammation.

Dr. Berg says foods such as pumpkin seeds, leafy greens, and avocados are all high in magnesium.

7. Probiotic-rich foods

Probiotic-rich foods like kefir, yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, and miso help with a balanced gut microbiome. A balanced gut reduces inflammation and supports kidney function by decreasing the production of harmful toxins like uremic toxins, which can accumulate when kidney function declines.
