Hair loss is definitely one of the most frustrating beauty issues to deal with. Whether you are suffering from a scalp condition, tugging too hard while brushing, or simply experiencing thinning hair with age, it can be difficult to determine the best steps to remedy the problem. Fortunately, over the years a number of serums that target the scalp have emerged that promise to boost volume and add thickness to your locks. These serums can get to the root (no pun intended!) of thinning hair or an irritated scalp.

To learn more about the best scalp serum to get thicker-looking, shinier hair, we spoke with Dr. Harikiran Cheruki, a dermatologist and the medical head of ClinicSpots. He said scalp serums with pumpkin seed oil are especially helpful because of their high content of nutrients that can help nourish and thicken the hair follicles. Find out more below!

If you are experiencing thinning hair or a dry, irritated scalp, the solution isn't always to just change your shampoo. Using a daily scalp serum with pumpkin seed oil and massaging your scalp is a great way to boost circulation, grow your hair, and hydrate your scalp.

Why is pumpkin seed oil effective

"Pumpkin seed oil is known for its anti-inflammatory properties that [help] reduce inflammation on the scalp and thus improve overall hair health," Dr. Cheruki said. "It can also help promote blood circulation in the scalp which helps deliver essential nutrients to the hair follicles for healthier growth. Furthermore, pumpkin seed oil can also help reduce hair loss as it nourishes the scalp and strengthens the hair follicles."

According to Dr. Cheruki, pumpkin seed oil "contains omega-3 and 6 fatty acids, as well as vitamins A, K, E, and zinc" which all contribute to healthy hair growth. "Additionally, it also helps to reduce dandruff and scalp irritation that can lead to thinner hair," he adds.

How to use

Dr. Cheruki says the best way to use pumpkin seed oil is with other natural ingredients like coconut oil or jojoba. "Mix a few drops of the oil with one teaspoon of another natural oil and massage your scalp with it in circular motions," he explains. "Leave it on overnight, or for at least 30 minutes, before washing off. Doing this regularly will help nourish and thicken your hair follicles while reducing scalp irritation. Additionally, you can also mix a few drops of pumpkin seed oil into your regular shampoo and conditioner to get maximum benefit."

While it may be frustrating to navigate hair loss, there are simple solutions that you can implement into your hair routine to regrow thinning hair and moisturize a drying scalp. A good regrowth serum can fill in a sparse scalp and enhance your new strands so they're thicker and sturdier. This can also help protect against future fallout. And, if you're still experiencing thinning hair, there are haircuts or styling techniques that can help camouflage sparse hair!
