Billie Eilish isn’t just known for her haunting vocals and chart-topping hits—she’s also built a signature style around oversized, baggy clothing.

In a recent interview with Elle, the 24-year-old opened up about the deeper reasons behind her fashion choices, as well as her complicated relationship with her body while growing up in the public eye.

Billie Eilish Opens Up About Why She Wears Baggy Clothes

Speaking in a cover story published on April 28, the singer explained that while she wasn’t the first to embrace the look—citing influences like Bloody Osiris, Tyler, the Creator, and Missy Elliott—her reasons were far more personal.

“I’m not the first person who’s worn baggy clothes,” she said, before adding that her style was rooted in deeper struggles. “I had a really, really toxic relationship with my body,” Eilish shared. “I had a lot of eating issues. I remember putting on, like, a big shirt and the relief that I felt.”

She also reflected on the mindset behind distancing herself from traditionally feminine fashion. “At the same time, it was my love for hip-hop culture and wanting to be a man. This is the misogyny that we all have within us…which is that I didn’t want to be seen as feminine, and therefore weak. It’s not right. I’ve found a good way of not feeling like that.”

One of the reasons fans connect so deeply with the "Ocean Eyes" hitmaker is her openness about her struggles and self-image. After her recent comments, fans took to Reddit to share their reactions.

“One of the only celebrities I relate to,” one user wrote. Another added, “I’m glad people are seeing the depth behind her choice. It wasn’t just a fashion trend—it was a survival mechanism.” A third commented, “I don’t blame her; being in the public eye since 13 must be unsettling.”

Billie Eilish Addresses Using Her Platform To Call Out ICE Raids

Eilish has also been making headlines for using her platform to speak out on political and social issues. At the Grammy Awards in February, she addressed the rise in ICE raids, stating, “No one is illegal on stolen land.”

Beyond that, she’s been vocal about wealth inequality, particularly calling out billionaires in the tech industry for their vast fortunes. Despite her own success, Eilish has made a point to give back—pledging $11.5M from her most recent tour to various charities and organizations, according to Elle.

“I was raised like this,” she told the publication. “When you have this insane platform that you can use to advocate for people, but you’re not advocating for people because you don’t want to be controversial?” she continued, adding, “Why is it controversial to step in when someone’s getting bullied and try to stop it? Yeah, you’re probably gonna have to deal with some problems, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it.”
