Brooke Shields is sharing photos of her difficult recovery process after an “excruciating” gym accident left her with a broken leg. The actress, who recently opened up about the grisly incident in People, shared a series of photos from her time in the hospital. She captioned the post, “I’ve come a long way since this, but the journey is just beginning.”

The actress broke her right femur while using a balance board. When she flew up and landed on her leg, she knew instantly that something was seriously wrong.
“Sounds came out that I’ve never heard before. The pain was so excruciating,” she explained.

What followed was a series of surgeries, placing metal rods in her leg to keep the bones in place. And it didn't end there. After Shields returned home, a staph infection had her quickly making her way back to the hospital where she underwent an emergency surgery and three blood transfusions.
Now, the 55-year-old is in physical therapy to learn how to walk again.
Despite this difficult time, Shields has managed to stay optimistic.
She told People, "This is my journey, and if it took me breaking the largest bone in my body, then recovery is something I want to share. We have to believe in ourselves and encourage one another. There's no other way to get through life, period."
