In recent years, CBD has become the go-to ingredient in beauty for a multitude of health benefits. A compound which is derived from both hemp and marijuana, CBD in oil form is rich in antioxidants and other properties which work to soothe and heal the skin. During the winter months, moisture is zapped from your skin due to the cold weather, leaving you feeling dry, itchy and cracked. Thankfully, experts can agree that CBD is the best ingredient to soothe your sensitive skin all winter long.

Cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Michele Green notes, “CBD oil is beneficial to dry skin conditions due to its anti-inflammatory properties. CBD reduces sebum production and is antimicrobial so it can also work for acne prone skin. Also derived from cannabis, hemp seed oil is rich in Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids which can make it ideal for treating skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis.”

As for how exactly CBD works to soothe your dry skin, Green references a study in The Journal of Dermatological Science which found that when applied to the skin, CBD inhibited the overproduction of keratinocytes, or skin cells. The study concluded that CBD had the potential to aid in treatment for psoriasis due to its effect on the skin’s surface. In the case of dry skin, CBD seemingly increases oil production, healing particularly dry areas.

When choosing the CBD product that is best suited for your dry skin, Green warns to research before you buy, as there is an influx of products on the market and not all of them are created equal. “You should make sure the product lists the amount of cannabidiol per milligram and that the CBD is sourced correctly according to the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients.”

As the future of skincare continues to progress, new ingredients emerge from the woodwork to save your dry, cracked skin. CBD is the perfect addition to your winter beauty lineup as it not only protects your skin from the weather, but also heals the damage already done by the cold. Running out of moisturizer? Consider throwing a CBD infused variation into the mix to achieve your most hydrated skin, even in the driest months.
