We rely on our phones daily, which means keeping the battery healthy and long-lasting is more important than ever. While battery wear and tear is inevitable over time, adopting a few smart charging habits can go a long way in preserving your phone’s battery and performance. Things like avoiding extreme temperatures, not letting your battery drop down to zero percent, and unplugging once it hits 100 percent are commonly recommended. But there’s one tip that often sparks debate: should you remove your phone case before charging?

Some experts say yes, arguing that leaving your case on traps heat, which builds up naturally while charging and can slowly degrade your battery over time. Removing the cover allows for better ventilation and helps your phone stay cooler, especially during overnight charging. But not everyone agrees this step is crucial, and it’s often overlooked because it feels like a hassle or seems unnecessary. So, is this tip worth your attention—or is it just another smartphone myth? Here’s what you need to know to make the best call for your device.

Should You Remove Your Phone Case?

Removing your phone case before charging has its pros and cons. Taking the case off can help your phone release heat more effectively, especially during fast charging or when you are charging it for long periods, such as overnight. Heat is one of the biggest culprits in battery degradation, and a case can trap warmth and raise the internal temperature of your device. However, the downside is that for many people, this step feels inconvenient, plus not all cases cause a significant heat issue—especially if you're using a quality charger and not pushing your battery to extremes. For everyday charging, the difference may be minor, and not all experts agree it's necessary unless your phone gets super hot while plugged in.

Good Charging Habits

There are a number of healthy charging habits that may have more of an impact on your phone than removing the case. Try to keep your battery level between 20 and 80 percent whenever possible, because full discharges and constant 100 percent charging can shorten battery lifespan. Avoid overnight charging if your phone doesn’t have built-in charging optimization, and never leave or charge your phone in hot environments, like on a car dashboard or in direct sunlight. Using certified chargers and unplugging your device once it's fully charged are also smart practices. These habits play a much bigger role in preserving battery health than whether or not your case stays on during charging.
