Is there anything more annoying than charging your iPhone for what seems like forever, only to constantly confront it dead and out of working order for the time being? The key way to ensure your phone is always charged isn’t to actually charge it every spare second you get. Experts agree: this is the one charging mistake you should stop making (it ruins your iPhone).

Overcharging

Sometimes moderation carries over into your tech life, especially when charging your phone is a concern.

“There’s nothing more stressful than taking up your phone and seeing that your battery is low,” says Steven Walker, CEO of Spylix. “While no one likes being taken off guard, keeping your iPhone too charged may cause more harm in the long term.”

According to tech expert, charging your iPhone overnight or for extended periods can be harmful to Apple. “Your phone or iPod battery will lose 100 percent to 80 percent of its original capacity after 400 charge cycles,” Walker says. “That’ll take about two to three years. Thin layers of lithium are produced as a by-product of the chemical reaction required to generate energy. Internal resistance rises decreases the quantity of charge available to power your gadget.”

One way you are overcharging your device is by leaving it plugged in overnight.

“Charging your phone overnight is a common practice that many iPhone users do when they are in bed,” says Michael Jan Baldicana, Technical and SEO Specialist with Dream Chasers XYZ. “But, the problem is that it’s actually ruining your battery life because the device is constantly being charged and discharged. Apple has created some guidelines for its customers about how to charge their devices and it’s best to follow them.. If you have an iPhone, you should only charge it in 30 minute increments instead of overnight or any longer period of time.”

When you're charging your iPhone, Baldicana stresses the importance of remembering that the battery will charge faster if you're not using it. “Some people might not know that but there are many ways in which you can ruin your iPhone’s battery,” Baldicana says. “Here are some of the most common mistakes people make when charging their phone:

**Leaving the screen on during charging
** Not letting the battery run out completely before plugging it in to charge
** Plugging into a power source other than a wall outlet
** Plugging into a power source that's too weak”

And Walker reminds us that Apple has created a software solution to ensure that you don't kill your iPhone accidentally. “Optimized Battery Charging is a feature available on any phone running iOS 13 or later,” Walker says. “Although your phone stops charging when it reaches 100%, the little charges that continue when it drops to 99 percent while you sleep will impact its overall lifespan.”
