4 Charging Mistakes That Are Shortening Your Phone’s Battery Lifespan

Are you charging your phone correctly? And by “correctly,” we mean: are all of your charging habits supporting your phone battery in a way that will boost its longevity? It’s very easy to make iPhone battery mistakes because you may not notice them right away. One mistake may turn into two mistakes, and before you know it, you are setting your iPhone battery up for degradation. It may take months or even a few years for the battery to begin to show its age, and your phone may provide clues by slowing down and becoming less efficient.

The goal is to always stay on top of your phone maintenance as best as possible, which means charging it properly and avoiding some of the biggest mistakes. These four charging mistakes are shortening your iPhone’s battery lifespan.

1. Using Damaged Charging Cables

Check your charging cables on occasion. If any appear frayed, torn, or just not in perfect, pristine condition, it’s time to ditch them and purchase new cables. Using damaged cables can be a risky fire hazard, and it can also result in your phone not receiving the charge it requires. And this means you’ll keep your phone on a charger for longer than necessary, which isn’t ideal for your battery.

2. Using Off-Brand Chargers

Your chargers needn’t all come from Apple, and you don’t have to spend a lot of money on them. But avoid off-brand chargers that aren’t Apple-certified. These chargers can’t guarantee your phone will get the proper charging power and may contribute to too-fast charging and your battery and phone overheating.

3. Letting Your Phone Die Before Charging It

When you consistently wait for your phone’s battery to dip down to zero percent before charging it, you tax your battery. It takes longer for your phone to then restart and begin charging again. It’s always better to keep your phone’s charge between 30 and 80 percent and give it shorter, but more regular charging sessions.

4. Charging Your Phone in a Hot Room

Charging your phone in a hot room or a really cold room — any environment with extreme temperatures — can cause a great deal of stress on your battery. The ideal temperature range to keep your iPhone in is between 32°F (0°C) and 95°F (35°C). Keep this in mind when you are charging your device, which naturally adds heat to your phone and battery.
