As the days get colder, starting each morning with a hot cup of coffee becomes an increasingly important ritual for many of us. And with so many tasty seasonal drinks to choose from, it can be hard to resist going with sugary, festive options. Unfortunately, loading your coffee with the wrong ingredients can be seriously damaging to your health and should especially be avoided if you’re trying to lose weight. Luckily, though, there’s one delicious spice that health experts say can actually help you on your fitness journey, all while adding some great flavor to your daily cup of joe: cinnamon.

To learn more about the health benefits of cinnamon and why you should consider sprinkling it in your morning bev if you want to slim down faster this winter, we spoke to Trista Best, nutritionist for Balance One Supplements. She told us all about its appetite-suppressing qualities and more. Find it all below!

If you're starting your day with a cup of coffee, the good news is that you'll already be setting yourself up for a decreased appetite. However, adding certain ingredients to the mix can help aid weight loss even more. "Coffee is an appetite suppressant naturally, but there are some ingredients we can place in our coffee to help suppress our appetite further," Best explains. And as it turns out, cinnamon is one of the best options out there.

Cinnamon is a popular addition to many coffee drinks thanks to the fact that it's totally delicious—and, luckily, Best says it also boasts a number of health benefits, including the fact that it can work as an appetite suppresser and keep those cravings at bay. "Cinnamon can help reduce cravings and appetite by improving feelings of satiety and fullness," Best tells us, noting that "it also helps to stabilize glucose which can prevent highs and lows, which often lead to intense cravings and overeating."

But the benefits of this tasty spice don't stop there! Cinnamon is great for weight loss for many different reasons, including the fact that it's packed with antioxidants.  These are also great for your immune system. "The plant compounds that act as antioxidants in the body stimulate the immune system and are also responsible for reducing inflammation by preventing clumping of blood platelets," Best says. Incredible!

So, there you have it: next time you want a bit of added sweetness in your coffee that can make it taste great and help you lose weight, sprinkle some coffee in your mug! It may help you avoid excessive snacking later in the day, and over time, it can even help improve your overall health.
