A Professional MUA Shares The 7 Common Makeup Habits That Make You Look ‘Older’

Makeup should enhance your natural features and give your skin a youthful, radiant finish. But according to professional makeup artist Ivelina Stefanova, certain application habits and product choices can do the opposite—adding years to your look without you even realizing it.

“I teach makeup lessons for a living, and these are the most common mistakes I see people make,” she explains. From skipping skincare prep to using the wrong shades and formulas, Stefanova breaks down the biggest beauty blunders that age you.

1. Skipping Primer and Moisturizer

“Not to prime is a crime,” Stefanova insists. Prepping your skin with exfoliation and moisturizer is essential for a smooth base. Even oily skin needs hydration—skipping it makes makeup settle into fine lines and emphasizes texture.

2. Heavy Foundation and Light Concealer

Less is more when it comes to complexion products. “If you have thin skin, a full-coverage foundation will enhance all the wrong spots,” she says. Instead, opt for lightweight formulas and add coverage only where needed. The same goes for concealer—choose a shade just one lighter than your foundation with pink or peach undertones to correct dark circles without creasing or exaggerating fine lines.

3. Over-Powdering and Harsh Contour

Baking and loading on powder may look flawless on camera, but in person, it can highlight every pore. Stefanova recommends using a light, creamy powder applied with a fluffy brush. The same goes for bronzer and contour—avoid stiff brushes and harsh gray tones. Instead, sweep a warm bronzer just above the cheekbones for a lifted, natural look.

4. Skipping Blush and Misusing Liner

“Don’t skip blush—it brings life back into the face,” she advises. Creamy or luminous blushes give a youthful, radiant glow. As for eyeliner, thick black liner all around the eyes can make them look smaller and tired. Instead, focus liner on the outer corners and softly extend upward for a lifted effect. A taupe or brown shadow on the lower lash line will add definition without heaviness.

5. Neglecting Brows

Brows frame the face, but overplucked or unfilled brows can make you look older. Stefanova cautions against using overly dark pencils or creating boxy, harsh lines. Instead, fill in with light strokes, soften the front of the brow with your finger, and finish with brow gel to brush hairs upward for an instant lift.

6. Forgetting Lip Liner and Using Matte Formulas

Skipping lip liner or applying lipstick shy of your natural lip line can make lips appear thinner. A soft pinky-nude liner enhances fullness, especially at the cupid’s bow. For a youthful finish, Stefanova recommends skipping dry matte lipsticks in favor of hydrating, satin, or glossy formulas.

7. Misplaced Highlighter

Powder highlighter applied too close to fine lines can accentuate dryness. Instead, Stefanova suggests creamy highlighters tapped on with your fingers. “This way it melts into the skin and looks natural and radiant,” she says.

The Bottom Line

Makeup should make you look and feel your best, not emphasize age or texture. By making small tweaks—hydrating your skin, choosing softer formulas, and applying with a lighter hand—you can achieve a youthful, glowing look that enhances rather than hides.

“Less is more,” Stefanova reminds. “With the right techniques, makeup can truly lift and refresh your face.”
