Walmart is continuing to be on the receiving end of its customer’s ire as the Arkansas-based box store refuses to accept Apple Pay in store.
Customers are “furious” and saying that, “this is why I don’t shop at Walmart” on social media in response to the U.S. retailer being one of the last remaining businesses in the country to not use the convenient mobile method in stores. Instead, Walmart continues to promote its own mobile payment system, Walmart Pay.
Along with companies like Arby’s, Applebees, and Hobby Lobby, Walmart continues to not accept the popular automatic payment method Apple in its over 4,000 locations. Home Depot was also famously a holdout on the Apple payment method, having partnered with Paypal, but even they have reportedly started “quietly” rolling out acceptance of the method in select stores this month. It’s your turn, Walmart!

Walmart Pushes Its Own Walmart Pay
While big box stores like Target and wholesalers like Costco began utilizing Apple Pay as a form of payment in stores in 2019 and 2018 (respectively), Walmart held out. Offered since 2015 (yes--it was the first mobile payment method of its kind), Walmart Pay is a digital wallet, similar to Apple's, that allows frequent Walmart shoppers to make purchases in-store using only their smart phones.
You can download the app for free--but it begs the question: what are infrequent or occasional Walmart shoppers supposed to pay with if they don't already have the app downloaded and logged in?

Customers Threaten To Boycott
A simple search for "Walmart Apple Pay" on X, formerly known as Twitter, turns up thousands of Tweets calling for the company to change its policy--or lose their business.
"This is why I don’t shop at Walmart," Tweeted user Big Dada.
"Can Walmart support Apple Pay? Like I’m gonna just start going to competitors," wrote user "slick" in response to the news that even Home Depot would be updating its policy, as of October 2024.

"The fact that Walmart still doesn’t have Apple Pay is crazy," another wrote.
"Walmart stock would rise 10% in a day if they allowed Apple Pay at checkout," urged another. It just makes economic sense!
