A good preventative skincare routine is one of the best ways to ensure flawless skin even as you age. The right combination of ingredients can help to minimize existing signs of aging while fighting against future fine lines and wrinkles, allowing for your complexion to maintain its elasticity throughout the years. But while this may seem simple enough, finding the right products to include in this routine is easier said than done as the market is saturated with products all claiming to be just the thing your skin needs. We turned to the professionals to get a final answer, asking three dermatologists what they actually use in their morning routines to maintain a flawless complexion. This is what they had to say.

Retinol

Known to boost collagen production and protect from free radical damage, retinol is one anti-aging ingredient you shouldn’t skip out on. “This natural derivative from Vitamin A stimulates collagen by increasing the turnover rate of the skin's cells. Like Vitamin C and other antioxidants, retinol helps to stimulate collagen production. I like to say that more collagen equals less wrinkles. All-Trans Retinol is the gold standard for keeping skin young,” explains celebrity dermatologist Tina Alster, MD.

Squalane

Squalane is not only great for repairing sun damage, but it also has wonderful anti-aging properties as well. “Squalane is a powerful anti-aging and anti-inflammatory ingredient that works by balancing the oil in your skin barrier. It’s also great for protecting against sun damage. Squalane works best when applied directly to the skin after serums and before moisturizer,” explains Dr. Howard Sobel. “A difference can be noticed after the first few uses as it absorbs water, keeping your skin hydrated and plump. My product recommendation is Biossance 100% Squalane Oil. This product can be used for the face, body and hair and is great for all types of skin.”

Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps to slow down signs of aging while boosting collagen production, making it a derm approved addition to your skincare routine. “Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant which means it scavenges for and neutralizes free radicals that may occur due to a variety of environmental stressors, especially UV damage from sun exposure. It not only prevents the damage but can also help repair it,” explains dermatologist Dr. Susan Bard, MD. “Vitamin C also improves hyperpigmentation by inhibiting tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in pigment production. It also is an essential cofactor in collagen production, thereby boosting collagen production and improving wound healing.” Add a serum to your morning lineup and your skin years down the road will reap the benefits!
