If you’re active on social media, chances are, you’ve been seeing some of the intense backlash Sydney Sweeney has received ever since participating in an American Eagle campaign that some internet users thought was “racist.” Well, now, the President of the United States is weighing in, and he is on team Sydney.
Yesterday, Donald Trump was informed by a reporter that the Euphoria actress, who has been getting a lot of heat for her latest jeans advertising campaign, is a registered Republican, leading him to not only praise her but the controversial advertisement as well. The ad, which played on genes and genetics, has been harshly criticized by many who felt it sent a harmful message, but that clearly did not sway the politician, who is now cheering for Sydney, especially after learning about her political affiliation. Read more about what he had to say below.
Sydney Sweeney Faces Backlash After Posing For American Eagle Ad Campaign
Over the weekend, Buzzfeed News reported that since last year, the Anyone But You star has been registered to vote as a Republican in the state of Florida.
What sparked the sudden interest in her voting status and political affiliations was her extremely controversial American Eagle ad campaigns, where, while promoting pairs of classic blue jeans, she read lines about "genes," as the brand wanted to play on words. In a commercial, Sydney says, "Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color."
"My jeans are blue," she adds. Then, in photo ad campaigns for the genes, there is a tagline included that reads, "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans."
Once the ads hit social media, the denim brand was quickly shamed by social media, with internet users feeling the ad was racially charged and promoted eugenics, which the National Institute of Health defines as the "use of selective breeding to improve the human race."
Others wrote that the ad was straight-up "racist," and overall, it is not getting a good reception whatsoever.

Donald Trump Says He 'Loves' Sydney's American Eagle Ad While Talking To Reporters
On Sunday, August 3rd, Trump took a moment to speak with the press in Pennsylvania, where he was told that Sydney, who is facing a lot of backlash right now, is a registered Republican. As it turns out, he was aware of the drama surrounding her jeans campaign and decided to defend and praise her enthusiastically.
After the reporter told Trump that the "very hot actress" was a Republican, he responded, "She's a registered Republican? Oh, now I love her ad."
"You'd be surprised how many people are Republicans," he continued.
"That's one I wouldn't have known, but I'm glad you told me that."
Later, on Monday morning, the 79-year-old still was not over discussing the actress nor the update on her political status, and wrote about her on his social media app, Truth Social.
"Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the 'HOTTEST' ad out there," he wrote. "It's for American Eagle, and the jeans are 'flying off the shelves.' Go get 'em, Sydney!"
While it's unclear as to whether or not the president would have commented on the matter if Sydney's political affiliation had not been revealed, it's still quite interesting to see just how far this jeans advertisement fiasco has gone.
