The One Drink Dermatologists Say You Should Avoid If You Have Thinning Hair

Wrinkles, fine lines, and thinning hair are all just apart of getting older. Fun, isn’t it? You can use creams and serums to help disguise the signs of aging on your face, but hiding your thinning hair can prove to be a little bit more difficult.

If anything, it’s comforting to know you’re not alone with this very common beauty issue. Many people — both male and female, old and young — struggle with thin hair.

"Hair loss and hair thinning is part of aging -- it affects all of us,” said Dr. Julia Russak, a board-certified dermatologist at Russak Dermatology. “The hair is a protein and to produce protein, our bodies must undergo healthy metabolic activity. Aging, stress and other factors may decrease your body's ability to produce these essential proteins.”

While we may not have control over many of the factors that play a role in thinning hair, there are certain measures you can take to help combat this issue.

When it comes to the drinks that can aggravate the problem, Dr. Russak recommends avoiding sugary drinks first and foremost. “Anything that will decrease the body's metabolic process and increase inflammation; such as sugary drinks and excess of alcohol.”

Dr. Russak explains that hair production is a highly metabolic process. When our body uses its resources for other systems instead of focusing on hair growth, that is when we start to see hair thinning and even loss. “What we want to prevent hair loss is to push metabolic activity to focus on hair production by supplying it with these amino acids which are the building blocks of protein.”

In the end, thinning hair can be tricky to deal with but not impossible to fix.

“Hair loss is a multifaceted problem, you really have to think in terms of optimizing your health to deter it, so optimizing your diet, and lifestyle in general, and reducing stress is a big one, like adding workouts to your routine if you don't already for stress-reduction.”

The Best Supplement To Help With Hair Loss

NeoCell - Keratin Hair Volumizer ($18.99)

The one product that Dr. Russka recommends using to help increase hair production and rebuild the hair shaft is NeoCell Keratin Hair Volumizer.

“It provides hydrolyzed proteins and amino acids that are bioavailable to the body to help boost the production of these hair proteins.”
