Elle Fanning turned heads at the 2026 CFDA Fashion Awards in New York City, but her latest red-carpet look left some fans underwhelmed.
The Great actress attended the ceremony in a custom Coach ensemble designed by the brand’s creative director, Stuart Vevers, and styled by Samantha McMillen.
Fanning wore a dusty rose silk slip dress with an ultra-plunging scoop neckline held up by delicate spaghetti straps. The floor-length design featured a diagonal wrap-style seam across the thigh and a subtle train. She initially layered a long black leather trench coat over the dress for an autumnal touch, later removing it for formal photographs.

Elle Fanning Fans Are Divided Over Her CFDA Look
The 28-year-old completed the look with a custom Coach Tabby shoulder bag covered in pale pink, confetti-like sequins, inspired by the brand’s Spring 2027 collection. Her accessories included a striking 18K rose gold Cartier Panthère de Cartier sautoir necklace featuring emerald eyes, onyx details, rubellites, and diamonds, along with coordinating diamond rings.
The Maleficent star wore her blonde hair in loose waves with a side part and opted for soft, rose-toned makeup that highlighted her natural freckles.
Despite the luxurious details, some fashion fans weren't convinced by the overall look.
“The look is pretty underwhelming, but lordy she's gorgeous. Love the hair and makeup. The necklace is cute too,” one person commented.
“I like it from the waist up. I’m not sure what it needs, but I think my issue with it is where the hems land. Floor length coat over a dress with a little bit of a train just doesn’t sit right with me. Something needed to be a different length,” another wrote.
A third critic was even less impressed, saying, “This is a RARE miss for me. The coat and dress are shapeless and don’t work together and the dress color is not great for her. I actually hate it :( oh well she’ll be back to hitting soon.”
Another added, “It’s just not working, what was her stylist thinking.”

Elle Fanning Embraces ‘Method Dressing’ for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping
The mixed reaction to her CFDA appearance comes as Fanning has been embracing full-on method dressing while promoting The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The actress plays a younger version of Effie Trinket and has been channeling the character’s extravagant Capitol aesthetic through a series of elaborate haute couture looks.
At a fan screening in London, Fanning wore a sculptural, ballerina-inspired pink gown featuring more than 390 feet of layered tulle and nearly 200 feet of silk organza.
For a photocall at The Corinthia in London, she stepped out in a custom pink coordinated skirt suit decorated with colorful three-dimensional butterfly appliqués.
She later changed into a richly patterned gold-and-purple floral silk-velvet suit for the film’s London premiere after-party.
While her CFDA look sparked mixed reactions, Fanning's promotional wardrobe has continued to deliver the dramatic, character-inspired fashion moments fans have come to expect.
