Makeup Artist Reveals The Trick She Swears By For Applying Eyeliner Over 40 That Gives A ‘Corner Lift’

As we age, achieving a smooth, flattering eyeliner look can feel impossible. Lids become textured, skin can sag slightly at the corners, and traditional lining techniques can make eyes look heavier instead of lifted. But makeup artist Erica Taylor shared a simple trick on TikTok that promises a subtle eye lift without pulling, tugging, or creating harsh lines.

Start on the Lash Line, Not Above It

Taylor recommends using a small pencil liner—she loves L’Oreal Infallible—and applying it directly on the bed of the lash. “Whether you have to get a bigger mirror, do so,” she says. The key is to avoid pulling the skin, which can cause crinkles or uneven lines. Instead, gently press the liner along the lash line, creating a smooth base.

Focus on the Outer Corner for a Lift

The magic trick happens at the outer corner of the eye. “Your eye naturally wants to go down, especially with hooding or sagging skin,” Taylor explains. “Don’t try to extend past that—just thicken the end slightly so the eye goes out, instead of down.” This simple adjustment gives the illusion of a lifted, more youthful eye without looking exaggerated.

To soften the effect, she recommends using a small angled brush, like the BK 208, to smudge and blend, avoiding harsh edges.

How to Do It With Liquid Liner

For those who prefer liquid liner, Taylor swears by Urban Decay ink liners. She suggests a gentle pressing motion rather than drawing a continuous line. “Press, press, press along,” she says. “Don’t try to make a line—texture will make it go haywire.” Finish by guiding the tip slightly outward at the corner, giving a subtle, lifted effect.

The Bottom Line

Taylor’s approach proves that eyeliner over 40 doesn’t have to be complicated. By focusing on the lash line, gently lifting the outer corner, and blending with a small brush, you can achieve a natural, youthful look that opens the eyes and enhances your features—without creating harsh lines or tugging at delicate skin. As she puts it: “Not a cat-eye, just a tiny lift.” It’s a subtle change that makes a big difference.
