Want to speed up your metabolism while you sleep? There’s one amazing fat-burning drink you  should have before bed if you want a flat stomach. And, even better: it’s music to the ears of anyone who knows they really should be drinking water, but can’t get on board with actually drinking water.

Coconut Water

Just got back from the gym and not sure what to drink before bed? Do your body a huge favor and replenish with something just a bit more unique than plain water: coconut water.

“Coconut water is low in calories, naturally contains electrolytes, and has more potassium than a banana,” says Registered Dietitian Kyle Shadix at Today's Dietitian. If you’re used to fueling up on sports drinks after a workout, making the switch to coconut water will save you calories and sugar, while still providing the flavor you crave.

Unfortunately, as Shadix points out, “non–evidence-based claims about coconut water’s ability to cleanse the kidneys, aid weight loss, and provide mental clarity” have made the news in recent years. Its actual benefits are impressive enough — there’s really no need to push forward hype.

Let’s go back to talking about the potassium contention coconut water for a moment — because it’s one nutrient that can help you build a stronger core.

“Upping your potassium intake can help ward off stroke and high blood pressure–and even early death in women, according to a study in the journal Stroke,” reports Eat This, Not That! “What's more, electrolytes like potassium are crucial for muscle health and recovery. The faster you recover, the more quickly you'll be able to get back in the gym to continue sculpting the body of your dreams.”

Coconut water is also a great source of calcium and magnesium, both of which are important for building strong bones. Magnesium also happens to have another superpower that will help in your quest to get strong abs.

“While it's not often talked about, magnesium is paramount to a healthy diet, as it helps with muscle contraction and relaxation, and also helps boost lipolysis, a process by which your body releases fat from its stores,” according to Eat This, Not That!

Plain old water is just as effective as coconut water when it comes to rehydrating your body and helping you recover after a workout. It’s just as worthy of your attention if you’re searching for a nighttime drink that boosts your metabolism and contains zero calories. But if you aren’t a fan of the taste of water, stocking up on a few bottles of coconut water may actually encourage you to drink more often, which will only help you lose weight and burn fat (remember: it’s not a miracle drink — maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regiment is key).
