This is a cut that has been around for decades and always shows its edge and glamour every few years as more women discover its power. But this year has been particularly kind to the bob, as more of us have embraced its universally flattering length, the way it almost effortlessly boosts hair volume and the appearance of health, and the ways in which it can be customized to suit difference hair types and face shapes.

There’s no doubt that the bob is one of the most flattering haircuts, especially for women over 40 who may be more concerned with hormonal hair changes they are experiencing. But bobs come in different shapes and styles. Here are four bob haircuts you’re about to see everywhere — they’re hot, trendy, and universally gorgeous.

1. ‘90s Bob

The stylist set have been flirting with ‘90s fashions for a few years now, but this is the year that the ‘90s bob is set to really take off. Hailey Bieber has helped catapult this haircut into the stratosphere, but it’s actually extremely flattering on most women. It falls to the chin and features lots of layers that flick out at the ends. You can have bangs with this bob or not — both work — but the important component is that it has major volume throughout. You can achieve this with a volume-boosting product that is applied to the roots of your hair and a good, old-fashioned blowout.

2. French Bob

The French bob, seen here on Sydney Sweeney, is short (often shorter than chin length or right at the chin), blunt, and has a curved appearance with a soft, more natural texture. This bob works beautifully with bangs or longer curtain-style fringe.

3. Bixie

If the bob isn’t short or daring enough for you, but you don’t want a super-cropped pixie, allow Florence Pugh to introduce you to the beautiful bixie: a hybrid of the two haircuts. The bixie has longer ends than a pixie, which allows you to style it in more ways, but it’s shorter in length than the bob, and this can be a good thing if your hair is thinning and too much weight makes it look stringy. This is a lower maintenance version of the bob that can slide by a few more weeks without a haircut to freshen it up. But it still manages to be super glamorous and flattering on a variety of hair types, whether your hair is fine and straight or thick and curly.
