With summer right around the corner, many people are looking to slim down and feel their best before the Fourth of July. But weight loss isn’t just about eating less—it’s about making smarter food choices. According to nutrition experts, certain everyday foods could be quietly sabotaging your progress. From hidden sugars to ultra-processed snacks, here are five foods health experts says you should cut out now if you want to see real results by July 4th.

1. Red Meat

We have to admit there's nothing quite like enjoying a juicy burger at a barbeque (or, let's be honest, a Big Mac at McDonald's—but don't even get us started on all those calories). However, when you eat red meat on a regular basis, dietitian Dana Ellis Hunnes says you could be setting yourself up for some serious health consequences over time.

"It increases inflammatory markers in the blood, including INF-1 and TMAO," she explains. IGF-1 (a.k.a. insulin-like growth factor 1) is a hormone that occurs naturally in our blood. However, excessively high levels could result in health issues like heart disease and diabetes. Additionally, high levels of TMAO, which plays a role in your cholesterol and metabolism, pose similar risks and could even lead to certain types of cancer over time. Yikes! Luckily, there are plenty of anti-inflammatory foods to eat instead.

2. Fruit Juice

When fruits are juiced, their natural sugars become concentrated, leading to a beverage that is calorie-dense and can disrupt blood sugar levels. Excessive sugar intake is associated with weight gain and can trigger inflammatory responses in the body.

"When choosing a fruit juice, check for one that is 100% fruit juice, which means there is no added sugar. Some fruit juice may have as much added sugar as a can of soda, which can lead to an instant spike in blood sugar," Sheri Berger, RDN, CDCES, says.

3. Vegetable Oils

Be careful with your cooking oils. Nanavati warns that refined harmful vegetable oils like corn and soybean oil are high in omega-6 fatty acids, which can contribute to inflammation and inhibit fat loss, among other risks. She recommends switching to healthier alternatives: "Use extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil for cooking and dressings." All of these come with tons of benefits!

4. Pastries

This is an obvious one, sadly. The high-calorie content with little nutritional value means these sweet treats can contribute to weight gain and are associated metabolic disorders, further affecting overall health.

5. Potato Chips

Although an extremely popular snack, these crunchy bites are also high in simple carbs and unhealthy fats. These salty chips are very calorie-dense and easy to overeat, which is bad news for both your blood sugar and weight.

"This one's a classic snack that's hard to put down. These are the snacks that are impossible to stop eating, calorie-dense, fat-laden, spike your blood sugar with their high glycemic index, crash your energy, and likely drive you to snack again as your blood sugar plunges. The snack-crash cycle can easily up your daily calorie consumption while also triggering your body to store more fat, especially around your middle," Fernandes says.
