Thinning eyebrows can be a frustrating beauty challenge, whether caused by over-plucking, aging, or genetics. Sparse brows can dramatically change the appearance of your face—but the good news is there are plenty of ways to fill and shape them. From clever makeup tricks to simple hacks, today’s techniques make it easier than ever to achieve naturally fuller brows that beautifully frame your face.

We spoke with Margina Dennis, celebrity makeup artist and brow expert, for her top tips on creating the perfect brow. According to Dennis, using a brow stencil, micro pencil or brow marker, and lightly tinted gel are among the most effective tools for achieving a polished, natural look.

1. Use a Brow Stencil

Dennis recommends starting with a brow stencil in the shape you prefer. “Take a light-colored pencil or concealer on a liner brush and draw the outline of the brow shape,” she explains. Next, fill in the outline using light, hair-like strokes. For added definition, Dennis suggests using a stiffer brush with brow pomade or powder that matches—or is slightly lighter than—your natural hair color, applying it in a gentle stippling motion.

2. Fill in Sparse Areas with a Micro Pencil or Brow Marker

To enhance fullness, Dennis advises using a micro pencil or brow marker to target areas with sparse hairs. “Use hair-like strokes to create fullness,” she says, emphasizing the importance of choosing a shade that matches—or is slightly lighter than—your natural brow color. Using a color that’s too dark can look harsh and may unintentionally age your appearance.

3. Finish with Lightly Tinted Gel

Finally, Dennis recommends finishing your brows with a lightly tinted gel to set the shape and hold hairs in place. She notes that you may need to touch up throughout the day to refine the look. “Less is more when it comes to brows,” she emphasizes. “Create a shape that frames the eyes rather than focusing on density for a more realistic appearance.”

Dennis also shares additional pro tips: using a thinner, firmer pencil gives you better control, and if you prefer a softer pencil, place it in the freezer for five minutes before use to firm it up. A taupe-colored pencil works well for most people, while pencils with too much red can look unnatural if your hair lacks red tones.
