In the photo, Gwen hardly looks like herself with dark lipstick, thin eyebrows, and her hair in curlers. In fact, some fans thought she more closely resembled Brittany Murphy in the snapshot. “I thought that was Brittany Murphy at first. RIP,” one commented. Another wrote, “Who else thinks she looks like Brittany Murphy here?”

However, some seem happy that she has stepped away from this makeup and hairstyle, connecting these throwbacks to cultural appropriation. “I love me some 90s Gwen, but I wonder if you were actually just exploiting a tradition that wasn’t meant for white teenage girls,” one commented.
