It’s amazing what a fresh new hairstyle can do! Whether you’re looking to just spice things up a little bit or are in the mood for an all-out makeover, changing just one simple thing like your hair makes all the difference.

As we age, many women start searching for ways to keep their appearance looking youthful and radiant and land on the desire to find the perfect hair color. But forget what you’ve heard about needing to look one particular way to look younger, celebrity hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons says it’s all about finding the right hair color for you.

Fitzsimons is a veteraned celebrity hairstylist of 15 years who has experience working with stars like Hailey Baldwin, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian West, Khloe Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian, Olivia Culpo, Shay Mitchell and many, many more. Totally casual.

With all of his expertise, you can say that Fitzsimons knows a thing or two about finding the most flattering color at any age. But there isn’t one universal answer to that sought-after question, “What hair color will make me look younger?”

His advice: avoid harsh colors and stick to soft natural tones that compliment your complexion.

“Everyone has different complexions and different color palettes of clothing so it really depends on each individual person. What I would recommend is staying away from harsh colors -- like a very dark brown or black, a very light blonde or platinum, or very vibrant colors like bright red,” Fitzsimons told SHEfinds. “The key to youthful hair is a soft natural tone, so something that compliments your skin tone that is warm. Dimension always helps, so a couple of highlights or lowlights can make the hair appear thicker which looks more youthful.”

Once you find your perfect color match, the secret to really looking 5 or 10 or even 20 years younger lies in proper hair care and maintenance.

“Making sure that your hair color doesn’t fade is a huge part of the color process, as well as having youthful beautifully toned hair,” says Fitzsimons.

To keep color treated hair looking its best, Fitzsimons recommends Alterna CAVIAR Anti-Aging Infinite Color Hold Dual-Use Serum.

Alterna Haircare CAVIAR Anti-Aging® Infinite Color Hold Dual-Use Serum ($34)

“It will protect your hair from UV rays which impedes the color from fading, it also adds shine which is the ultimate goal in having youthful hair. The serum protects your hair from heat, which is a big complaint people with color processed hair have, so you’ll have all around healthier shinier and less faded colored hair!”
