While a good haircut has the potential to cut years off your face and act as a fantastic tool for anti-aging, unfortunately there are also styles which can achieve the opposite effect. As you grow older, it’s vital to find a hairstyle that will enhance your natural features while not drawing attention to fine lines and other signs of aging. If you’re in the market for a new haircut, there’s one style that hair experts warn you should steer clear of in order to preserve youth in your features.

In order to maintain a youthful appearance, hair experts agree that a blunt cut with bangs can appear quite harsh and reveal your age. Gina Scipioni, Director of Education at Neuma explains, “A short blunt bob with straight across blunt bangs can draw attention to the eyes and jawline which are the main areas that show signs of aging first.”

Although bangs are back in style in a big way this year, they may create a harsh effect on your face, causing you to look older. Stylist and beauty expert Gina Rivera believes that no styles should be strictly off limits to anyone, but, she warns, “Extremely straight hair, and also hair that is cut with a blunt bang, can tend to make features pronounced rather than soft which can at times age a person unduly.”

Instead of a harsh cut with bangs, Rivera recommends a good shoulder length chop or some shag with light layers to allow some movement in the hair without being too piecey. Likewise, Scipioni suggests a similar style with “soft textured layers and personalized face framing.” There’s no one size fits all haircut to abide by, so it’s important to work with your stylist to ensure that the cut you decide on flatters your features.

Your haircut says so much about your personality, so it should be tailored to your face and enhance your natural features, rather than aging you. If you still feel compelled to play with a bang style, there are a number of variations from curtain bangs to face framing layers that may fulfill the change you crave without adding years to your appearance. When in doubt, remember that there are always workarounds to ensure you get a cut that suits your personality without compromising youth.
