Dermatologists say sunscreen is the most important product in your skincare routine. No matter what the season or the weather, it’s essential to lather up your skin and protect it from the sun’s harmful UV rays.

“Sunscreen still remains the most important weapon in preventing premature skin aging and skin cancer,” says Dr. Craig Kraffert, M.D., board-certified dermatologist and President of Amarte.

Not only is sunscreen needed to prevent sunburns and skin cancer, but it’s also the most effective product you can use to prevent premature signs of aging. Overexposed to the sun and tanning can cause wrinkles, especially on your face, chest, hands.

Even if you have a sunscreen that you apply daily, it’s important to know what ingredients are in it. Some cheaper products contain chemicals that will do more harm than good for your skin.

Sunscreen Ingredients To Avoid: Oxybenzone and Octinoxate

Board-certified cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Karyn Grossman says Oxybenzone and Octinoxate are a “drugstore ingredient no-no.”

These ingredients are very common chemical filters that can be found in many commercial chemical sunscreens at the drugstore. They are used to absorb UV light but research has shown that they penetrate the skin and can disrupt hormones.

Instead, Dr. Karyn Grossman recommends using products that contain ingredients like Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide for sun protection.
