As we get older, our makeup techniques often need to evolve right along with our skin. The eyeshadow placement that worked in our 20s and 30s can sometimes emphasize hooded lids, fine lines, or a loss of definition around the eyes after 50. Fortunately, one beauty creator says there’s a simple trick that can instantly create a brighter, more lifted look—and it all comes down to geometry.
Makeup enthusiast Kimberly Weimer recently shared her go-to eyeshadow technique for mature eyes, explaining that the secret is creating a strategic triangle shape rather than placing shadow directly in the crease.

Why Traditional Eyeshadow Placement Can Be Tricky After 50
Many women are taught to apply darker eyeshadow directly into the crease to add dimension. However, as the eyelid naturally changes with age, the crease can become less visible or more hooded, making that placement less effective.
Instead of deepening the actual crease, Weimer recommends creating the illusion of a lifted eye by bringing shadow slightly above it.
“Instead of placing that color directly in my crease, I’m going to stare straight ahead,” she explains.
This subtle adjustment helps ensure the shadow remains visible when the eyes are open, creating a more lifted and awake appearance.
The Triangle Technique
The look starts with a soft matte base shade applied all over the lid. Weimer uses a light pink eyeshadow, blending it from the lash line almost to the brow bone and extending slightly toward the outer brow area.
Next comes the defining step.
Using a neutral brown shadow, she looks straight ahead and places the color just above the center of the eye rather than directly in the crease.
“I’m going in directly above my pupil and I am going to make a straight line out toward my outer brow,” she says.
Once that line is established, she creates the second side of the triangle by connecting the outer brow area down to the outer corner of the eye.
“So now we’re kind of making a triangle, right?” she explains.
The triangle is then softly filled in and blended to eliminate any harsh edges.
Why It Works
The technique essentially redirects the eye upward and outward, creating a visual lifting effect. Rather than emphasizing the natural downward pull that can occur around the eyes with age, the triangular placement mimics the look of a subtle eye lift.
The light matte shade helps brighten the lid, while the neutral brown triangle adds structure and definition without appearing heavy or overly dramatic.
Because the shadow sits slightly above the natural crease, it remains visible even when the eyes are open, making the eyes appear larger and more defined.

How To Recreate The Look
To try the technique yourself:
- Apply a light matte shadow across the entire lid and up toward the brow bone.
- Look straight ahead into a mirror.
- Using a neutral brown shade, draw a soft line above the center of your pupil toward the outer brow.
- Connect that point down to the outer corner of the eye, creating a triangle.
- Fill in the shape and blend thoroughly.
- Keep the edges soft and diffused for the most flattering effect.
The result is a simple, age-friendly eyeshadow look that brightens the eyes, creates definition, and gives the appearance of a more lifted eye area—all without complicated techniques or dozens of products.
