As temperatures rise and sunny days become the norm, many of us start making small adjustments to our beauty routines. Heavy moisturizers are swapped for lighter formulas, richer makeup looks give way to a more natural glow, and hair and skincare products that can withstand heat and humidity suddenly become essential. Summer brings its own set of skincare challenges, which makes it the perfect time to refresh your routine and make sure your products are working with the season, not against it.

But while changing a few beauty habits can help you look and feel your best, dermatologists say there are also some important steps you shouldn’t overlook.

The combination of stronger UV rays, increased outdoor time, and higher temperatures can take a toll on your skin if you’re not careful. If maintaining healthy, youthful-looking skin is one of your goals this summer, experts say these two skincare practices are among the most important habits to keep on your to-do list.

1. Sunscreen

Sunscreen is one of the most important tools you can have in your skincare routine, especially during the summer when UV rays are stronger and many of us spend more time outdoors. Whether you're heading to the beach, taking a walk around the neighborhood, or simply driving with the windows down, sun exposure can add up quickly. Daily sunscreen use helps protect your skin from sunburn and can reduce the appearance of premature aging caused by UV damage, including fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots.

With that said, sunscreen isn't just a summer essential—it's an everyday essential. UV rays are present year-round, even on cloudy days and during the colder months. UVA rays (which are largely responsible for signs of skin aging) can even penetrate clouds and glass. That's why dermatologists recommend applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day and reapplying as directed when spending extended time outdoors. Making sunscreen a daily habit is one of the simplest ways to help protect your skin's long-term health and appearance.

2. Don't Forget a Sun Hat

A sun hat is another smart addition to your warm-weather routine because it provides an extra layer of protection for areas that often receive a lot of sun exposure, including the face, ears, scalp, and neck. When you're shopping for a hat, consider choosing one with built-in UPF protection, which is designed to block a significant amount of UV radiation. Wide-brimmed styles can offer even greater coverage, and help shield delicate skin while keeping you cooler and more comfortable during sunny summer days.
