This year’s Cannes Film Festival was among the most glamorous yet, showcasing everything from quirky trends to semi-sheer gowns. While the event enforces strict red carpet rules, Heidi Klum turned heads by seemingly breaking one with her latest appearance.
The GNTM host made a striking appearance at the Partir Un Jour (Leave One Day) screening and opening ceremony on May 13, wearing a show-stopping Elie Saab gown that appeared to defy the festival’s updated dress code. The pink strapless gown featured cascading layers of organza resembling blooming flowers, a bold thigh-high slit, and an elegant train.
Heidi Klum Breaks Cannes Film Festival Code
Though she looked stunning and commanded attention on the red carpet, many were surprised she was allowed to walk given the festival’s recently revised outfit guidelines.
The website says, "For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the Red Carpet, as well as in any other area of the Festival. Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater, are not permitted. The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules."
Reports also claim that some guests were turned away based on their attire.
Fans online were also confused by her choice of outfit, as one user commented on Elie Saab's Instagram account: 'What happened to no long trains?'
Cannes Film Festival Updates Their Red Carpet Rules
The website did shed light on what is allowed, stating, "For the Grand Théâtre Lumière gala screenings taking place around 7 and 10 p.m., which are attended by the artistic teams, evening wear (long dress, tuxedo) is required. Alternatively, you may also wear a little black dress, a cocktail dress, a dark-colored pantsuit, a dressy top with black pants, elegant shoes and sandals with or without a heel (no sneakers), or a black or navy-blue suit with a bow tie or dark-colored tie".
Some celebrities pushed the boundaries of the dress code, toeing the line with subtle defiance—like Amal Clooney, whose modest train was just enough to raise eyebrows.
