If you’re rocking bangs, you know that they can grow incredibly fast–even when the rest of your hair feels like it’s been stuck at the same length for forever. It can be a pain to keep your bangs trimmed and in tip-top shape–especially when you’re not due to go back for a haircut for another few weeks.

But what’s the alternative? Outgrown bangs that look like a shaggy mess? No way! When you need to trim your bangs between salon visits, you can do it yourself at home. This is not crazy talk–there are tips and tricks that can help you pull off a DIY bang trim at home. I know what you’re thinking–”There’s no way I’m taking scissors to my own hair!” But it’s not as scary as you may think.

Trimming your own bangs sounds like a daunting task, but it really isn’t. The steps are simple and easy to follow. Cutting your own bangs will save you time and a lot of money from having to run to the salon every few weeks. All you need is a pair of hair clipping scissors and a comb–and dry hair! You don’t want to cut your bangs while your hair is wet unless you want them to dry shorter than you were expecting (yikes).

Follow the steps below to cut your own bangs like the pros. You’ll be a bang trimming expert in no time!

Before we start, follow these tips for best practice:
–Only cut your hair when it’s dry, otherwise, it could end up drying too short.
–Go slowly, this is no time to rush.
–The first time you try a DIY trim, make your bangs a little longer. You can always go back and cut more hair off if you want them shorter or mess up, but you can’t add more hair back on (until it just naturally grows back, that is).
–Check your work often to make sure you’re not cutting off too much

60+ Gift Ideas For Everyone On Your List

1) Fasten Your Hair In A Ponytail

Since we’re focusing on your bangs here, you don’t want the rest of your hair getting in the way. To make sure that doesn’t happen, secure your hair in a ponytail or bun at the back of your head. Only leaving out your bang hairs will allow you to see what you’re doing better and keep the rest of your hair out of your face.

Trust us, you don’t want anything obstructing your view when you’re putting scissors to your hair.

2) Comb Your Bangs

Now that the rest of your hair is up and out of the way, you want to start focusing on your bangs. Comb your bangs forward with a fine-tooth comb so they lay flat against your forehead. Make sure you get all of the hair of your bangs combed to the front--you don’t want to miss any stray hairs.

3) Time To Start Cutting--From The Middle

Now, comb your bangs again, pulling the comb down to where you want your bangs to hit on your forehead. Holding the scissors vertically, start making tiny snipes to your fringe from the middle of your bangs, directly below the comb. You want to work from the middle to the outer left corner, then back from the middle to the outer right corner

4) Trim the Outer Corners

Now onto the outer corners of your fringe. Using the comb to guide your cuts again, hold the scissors at a 45-degree angle this time and make small snipes to your hair. You want your bangs to have a gradual slope to them which means they’re straight across your forehead and get progressively longer on the outer edges.

5) Check Your Work Often

When you’re finished snipping, check your work to see if its even and you’re happy with the results. If you want to make any changes, go back to step two and repeat until you’re satisfied.
