Inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury. It’s a necessary function that allows the body to heal after a sickness or even a mild wound, but it can also be triggered by stress, a lack of sleep, and eating specific foods that can trigger an inflammatory response.

When it comes to food and keeping your skin and health in optimum condition, avoiding a diet filled with inflammatory foods that cause your body to respond as if it’s injured is important. Not only can chronic inflammation be harmful to the body and lead to serious diseases like Alzheimer’s and heart conditions, but it can also ‘age you quickly,” according to a naturopathic doctor.

Here are three anti-inflammatory foods to avoid.

donuts

1. Donuts

Donuts are high in refined sugar, which can spike your blood sugar and release pro-inflammatory molecules that have a negative effect on cells and tissues. They’re also fried in oils that can contain trans fats and saturated fats. Unfortunately, they can negatively impact gut bacteria, too, and are low in nutritional content.

cereals

2. Breakfast Cereals

Gone are the days when breakfast cereals used to be touted as healthy foods to help start your day. Processed cereals are often high in sugar, which promotes systemic inflammation and can spike insulin. Cereals are also high in refined carbs and often have artificial flavors and colors that promote inflammation. When you blood sugar spikes, it causes Advanced Glycation End Products that damage collagen and elastin and can lead to poorer skin appearance.

candy

3. Candy

Candy is absolutely loaded with refined, simple sugars. These sugars lead to formation of AGEs that damage proteins like collagen and elastin. Excess sugar can even generate free radicals that cause oxidative stress and inflammation.

Keeping your sugar consumption to a minimum is a smart way to help your skin look its best and keep you healthy.
