Beauty Experts Share The Biggest Collagen-Depleting Mistakes To Avoid This Year

Collagen is one of those behind-the-scenes heroes that keeps skin looking firm, smooth, and resilient. It acts like the scaffolding that holds everything up, giving skin its bounce and youthful structure. As we age, though, our bodies naturally produce less collagen, and this is when fine lines and sagging skin become more evident. This process is completely normal—but it’s not the whole story.

Certain lifestyle habits and diet choices can speed up collagen breakdown, making skin age faster than it needs to. Things like what you eat, how you handle stress, and how much sun exposure you get all play a role in how well your collagen holds up. A few small changes can make a big difference, though. If collagen protection is on your mind, here are three collagen-depleting mistakes to avoid.

1. Not eating enough vitamin C

Vitamin C is essential for collagen production—it helps your body actually build and stabilize collagen fibers. Without enough of it, collagen synthesis slows down, and the collagen you do have becomes weaker and more prone to breakdown. Since the body can’t make or store vitamin C on its own, constantly skipping vitamin-C-rich foods like citrus fruits, berries, and leafy greens can undermine skin firmness and repair over time. If you aren’t sure you’re getting enough of this key nutrient from food sources, speak with your doctor about taking a supplement.

2. Not eating bone broth

Bone broth is a natural source of collagen, along with amino acids like glycine and proline that your body uses as building blocks for its own collagen production. When your diet lacks these, your body finds it more difficult to maintain strong, healthy skin. While collagen can be made from other protein sources, regularly skipping collagen-rich foods like bone broth may slow the skin’s ability to repair and replenish its collagen stores.

3. Not wearing sunscreen

Sun exposure is one of the fastest ways to break down collagen in the skin. UV rays penetrate deep into the dermis, where they damage collagen fibers and trigger enzymes that wear down existing collagen. Without daily sunscreen, even on cloudy days, this damage accumulates over time, leading to premature wrinkles, sagging, and loss of elasticity that goes far beyond normal aging.
