Have you ever noticed that when your iPhone battery is consistently low, it doesn’t work as well? If that’s the case, you’re not alone.
Many people don’t realize just how important it is to charge your phone correctly, and believe it or not, there are good and bad ways to do it. Although it may seem like all you have to do is plug your phone into whatever charger you have available once your battery goes low, there’s more to it, and charging it properly can help your phone last longer. We spoke with tech expert Steven Athwal with The Big Phone Store about three iPhone charging tips that can “optimize” its performance. Read more about them below.
1. Use A High-Quality Charger
Believe it or not, not all iPhone chargers are made equally. Some cheap chargers, while they can save you in a pinch, are a lot less effective than high-quality ones and can actually do some damage to your phone's battery over time.
"We've lost so many charging ports, just totally burned out or batteries depleted from cheap cables," says Athwal. "Apple-sanctioned or well-regarded third-party chargers manage the current properly and thus protect the phone in the long term. It is not worth jeopardizing it for saving a few pennies because you will be paying a much, much more for new batteries or even a new phone when you use cheap cables."

2. Keeping Your Phone Too Hot
There's a reason why iPhones have those heat warnings and need to shut down for a moment when it's too hot - it's because heat can really damage your device! If you live in a sunny, hot climate or work in warm conditions, you'll want to be diligent about making sure your iPhone doesn't sit out in the sun or get too hot.
"Heat is not good for batteries, [so] make sure to keep your phone cool, especially when charging your phone," explains Athwal. "I've seen a lot of devices with serious damage from having it charged under a pillow. Temporary shutdowns or even permanent damage to internal components can take place. Worst-case scenario, it might cause a bloated battery, which is just tremendously unsafe."

3. Letting Your iPhone Battery Get Too Low
Some people tend to wait until their iPhone is on 5% battery life or less before they charge it, which can actually hurt their battery as time goes on. While it may seem like common sense to wait until your phone is just about empty to charge it, many tech experts advise you to do things differently.
"Once the health of a battery decreases, its performance follows immediately behind," notes Athwal. "Phones start slowing down, shutting down at the most inconvenient times, charging more often, and taking longer to do so. You're not just leaving the phone on longer when charging it properly, you're keeping it running as it should be."
