This week, it was revealed that Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, are spearheading a $1.4B development project to transform the uninhabited island of Sazan in Albania into an ultra-luxury eco-resort. The 1,400-acre island is set to be redeveloped into a high-end tourist destination designed to attract global travelers.
However, the project has already triggered significant backlash from locals and environmental activists. Critics have raised concerns about building on a protected coastal wetland, warning that the development could threaten sea turtle habitats and migratory bird populations. Others have also pointed to broader criticism surrounding extreme wealth and the ability of billionaire investors to acquire and reshape entire islands for private luxury projects.
Trump discussed the venture during a May 31 interview with podcast host David Senra, describing it as a massive and long-term undertaking.
“I’m working on an incredible project with my husband in the Mediterranean. It’s massive in scale,” she said, adding that the site is a “beautiful 1,400-hectare private island in the middle of the Mediterranean.”
She explained that the vision for the resort centers on preserving the natural landscape while integrating architecture into the environment. “Over the course of many years, we developed the opportunity to help realize its potential and transform it, but with a lot of restraint and care,” she said.
Ivanka also revealed how the couple first came across the location by chance during a boating trip. “We were on a friend’s boat and we stopped for a swim,” she recalled. “We swam to the islands, we went on a hike, barefoot, all the way up to the top and we were just captivated. And it stayed with us ever since.”
The planned development will reportedly include not only Sazan Island itself, but also a nearby peninsula across from it.
