Kelly Clarkson Admits To ‘Changing The Lyrics’ To ‘Angry’ Song About Brandon Blackstock Amid News Of Her Ex Husband’s Passing: ‘I’m Not Gonna Change It Again’
August 11, 2025 by Julia DeKorte
Kelly Clarkson’s ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, tragically passed away last week at the age of 48 after a three year battle against cancer. The singer has rescheduled all her performing commitments to be there for the two children she shared with Blackstock, Remington, 9, and River, 10. As fans grieve alongside them, a resurfaced video from just under two weeks before Blackstock’s death is going viral. In the video, Clarkson changes the lyrics to her song, “Piece by Piece,” after feeling like the original lyrics were a bit “angry.” Keep reading for more information.
The video in question, posted on TiKTok by @modestishottest4u, was taken at Kelly’s Las Vegas Studio Session residency on July 26th. Multiple times throughout the video, she broke down in tears while introducing the newly reworked version of her song, “Piece by Piece.”
In the original lyrics, which came out in 2015, Clarkson was praising her Blackstock for not being like her father. “He never walks away / He never asks for money / He takes care of me / ‘Cause he loves me.” Then, in 2023, she reworked the lyrics for the first time, writing, “I just walk away / when they ask for money / I take care of me / cause I love me,” seemingly in reference to Blackstock’s extensive financial requests during their divorce
Then, on July 26, just 12 days before Blackstock’s death, she changed the lyrics once more, singing, “I’m learning everyday how to love me. I let go of the shame that you taught me. Piece by piece I restored the faith that a heart can still beat even if it breaks.”
