Kim Kardashian Has Reportedly 'Rented' Princess Diana's 'Revenge Dress' From 1994 For This Year's Met Gala

If the rumors are true, Kim Kardashian could be heading into controversy once again—this time over her potential Met Gala look.

Reports suggest she’s on this year’s guest list and may be planning to outdo her headline-making Marilyn Monroe dress moment from 2022 by wearing another piece of fashion history: Princess Diana’s iconic “revenge dress.”

The speculation stems from a viral post by the account @celebsnapzx, which claimed, “Kim Kardashian Has Rented Princess Diana’s Iconic ‘Revenge Dress,’ And She Is Set To Wear It At This Year’s Met Gala.”

Kim Kardashian Has Reportedly Rented Princess Diana's 'Revenge Dress'

Diana’s so-called “revenge dress” is the off-the-shoulder black silk gown she wore to the Serpentine Gallery gala on June 29, 1994. Designed by Christina Stambolian, the dress featured a striking sweetheart neckline, ruched bodice, and an asymmetrical hem—details that were considered bold by royal fashion standards at the time.

Interestingly, Diana had owned the dress for several years before wearing it, initially deeming it too daring. But she ultimately chose it for a now-iconic public appearance that coincided with a major moment in royal history. The same evening, King Charles publicly admitted to infidelity in a televised documentary—cementing the dress’s place in pop culture as a symbol of confidence.

In 1997, the gown was later sold at auction for $24,150 to a Scottish businessman, further adding to its legacy as one of the most talked-about dresses of all time.

Kim Kardashian's Love Of Wearing Pieces From Icons

While the rumor may just be speculation, the reality TV Star has a track record of wearing pieces tied to iconic figures.

In fact, she previously paid tribute to Princess Diana by wearing the late royal’s Attallah Cross pendant to the LACMA Art + Film Gala on November 2, 2024. It marked the first time the necklace had been seen in public since Diana wore it in 1987. The mom of four purchased the piece at a Sotheby's auction in 2023 for $197,453.

Of course, her most talked-about archival fashion moment remains the Met Gala in 2022, when she wore Marilyn Monroe’s original “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress. She borrowed the historic champagne-colored gown from Ripley's Believe It or Not!, which had purchased it at auction for $4.81M in 2016.

Because of the dress’s extreme fragility, the Skims mogul only wore the original piece briefly while walking the Met steps, later changing into a replica for the rest of the evening. Even so, the decision sparked widespread backlash, with fashion historians and critics online arguing that such an important cultural artifact should not be worn at all.
