When people think about some of the most iconic VMA moments from the last 10 years, it’s hard not to think about Lady Gaga. This year, the prominent artist made a triumphant return in a dramatic gothic gown and took home a hefty number of awards.

At last night’s MTV Video Music Awards, one of the more popular award shows in pop culture, Lady Gaga, while only there for a short while, made quite a big impact in a dramatic, head-turning black poofy gown that matched the gothic themes she’s been embracing. Not only did her outfit grab attention, but the number of awards she received did too, as she was awarded four VMAs, including Artist of the Year, which she accepted before turning around to play a massive show at Madison Square Garden. Read more about her night below.

Lady Gaga Arrives At The MTV Video Music Awards In A Puffy Gothic Gown

These days, the singer-songwriter is all about taking a walk on the darker side, wearing dark, gothic clothes, starring in Halloween-coded shows like Wednesday, and releasing new music about the dead. She leaned into this aesthetic for this year's Video Music Awards, which took place last night at the UBS Arena in Staten Island, New York. It was happening just a few miles away from where she was expected to play a large, exciting show at Madison Square Garden that same evening.

She arrived at the coveted awards show in a large, black gown that was extremely theatrical and grand. The dress had large sleeves with shoulder padding that went up to her neck, and had black ruffles all along them as well as all the way down its long skirt. While performing her two latest hit singles for the awards show, Abracadabra and Dead Dance, she was seen on stage for her famous tour, singing in exciting and eye-catching gothic looks.

Lady Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, also had her hair dyed black with short, choppy bangs, which were tied into a voluminous updo completed with floral-inspired hair pieces that almost resembled dying flowers, adding to the gothic aesthetic. It was a look that matched her vibe lately, with her latest album, Mayhem, having her take on a darker, edgier look for performances, event appearances, and music videos.

One of the most significant awards out of the impressive four the Star Is Born actress received was Artist Of The Year, which is given to an artist who has contributed impactful and prominent work throughout the year. Given that her previous original album was released in 2020, her return with Mayhem was a really big deal in pop music, especially since she accompanied it with a tour, music videos, and more.

Standing on stage to accept her award in her large, black ruffled gown, she spoke on being a hardworking artist these days, sending a message to her fans, "I hope as you navigate through the mayhem of daily life, you are reminded of the importance of the art of your life, that you can count on yourself and your simple skills to keep you whole, your rehearsal, your discipline, your craft deserves to be rewarded for its passion."

"The way you move through your life is iconic and rare," she continued. "It is entirely yours."

After dedicating her award to her "audience," she joked, "I wish I could stay and watch all these amazing performances, but I have to go back to Madison Square Garden," referencing the large crowd waiting for her to start her Mayhem Ball performance.

Those same fans quickly took to the internet to praise the 39-year-old for her moving speech and fabulous outfit, referencing her as one of the most "iconic" artists in VMA history.

"She is such a queen!" wrote a fan on Instagram. "Her outfits every year at VMAs are iconic, and so is her music."

"A true icon," added a fan.

"What a privilege to live in the same lifetime Gaga lived," wrote another.

One fan joked about the prestigious award, commenting, "I think they meant artist of the century." Others referenced her speech, writing that Lady Gaga herself is "iconic and rare."

"No one does it like Gaga," added another.
