Despite all of the fashion icons that tend to show up, thousands of people were anticipating what Lauren Sánchez was going to wear last night. Turns out, they were disappointed.

Social media users are slamming the former journalist, who reportedly paid $10M to score a spot as a co-chair for this year’s gala alongside her billionaire husband, Jeff Bezos, after seeing her dress. The gown drew a lot of negative attention, with fashion critics and internet users alike not just because it’s a silhouette she wore several times before, but because they felt it looked “boring” and cheap. Read more about it below.

Lauren Sánchez Wears A Navy Gown To The 2026 Met Gala

Yesterday was the first Monday of May, which marks the annual Met Gala hosted by Vogue's Anna Wintour. This year's theme of "Fashion Is Art," which corresponds with the Metropolitan Museum of Art's "Costume Art" exhibit, was especially trending, due to not only the guest list but the list of celebrity co-chairs as well.

The famous gala received a lot of backlash after it was revealed that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife of almost one year, Lauren Sánchez, would be co-chairs. Media outlets have reported that the couple became honorary co-chairs of the event after the billionaire entrepreneur donated $10M. People in the fashion industry allegedly saw this as a "slap to the face," given their lack of experience with fashion and art, and others thought it was a sign the gala could start losing its artistic qualities.

Therefore, when the 56-year-old stepped out on the red carpet, thousands of people at the event and at home were awaiting her look with anticipation. She wore a figure-hugging strapless navy blue gown custom-designed by Daniel Roseberry of Schiaparelli.

The dress included a deep neckline similar to ones she's worn before, and had bejeweled straps, which reportedly were designed to emulate the ones on the gown worn in John Singer Sargent's iconic "Madame X" painting from 1884.

Social Media Users Slam Lauren's Dress As 'Boring'

After pictures and videos of the author and helicopter pilot in her navy gown were shared on social media as soon as she stepped out onto the Met Gala carpet, users had a whole lot to say on various platforms.

The gown quickly started getting some negative attention, as after all the drama surrounding Lauren and her husband joining the gala as co-chairs, many expected her to make the most of the moment and wear something she had never worn before. Despite her attempts to adhere to the theme, people were not having it, and even started writing about how the gown looked like something that could be ordered off her husband's iconic website.

"I feel like this is too basic for the Met Gala," commented an Instagram user.

"Amazon Prime chic," added another.

One user felt the navy gown was "giving mother of the bride," and another wrote it was "basic and boring."

"Imagine having your husband pay your way to be a fashion girlie and still having [garbage] taste," wrote an angry user.

"This should be the final Met Ball," added another. "Tragic."
