No matter how much time and effort you invest into your skincare regimen, there will always be a need for a concealer. Even the healthiest skin will always show impurities or flaws every so often. Whether you need it daily or a couple of times per week, concealer is an excellent way to correct discolorations or small flaws immediately.

With the right makeup skills, using a simple concealer can transform your face for an overall younger, more energized appearance. And it is much easier to improve your concealer skills than you would think. Here are four tricks makeup artists swear by:

1. Start With Foundation

Always start with a foundation when using a concealer, not the other way around. Prepping your complexion with foundation will make you need less concealer to color correct, plus it can make your concealer adhere more evenly and strongly to the skin. If you start with concealer and apply foundation after, you will most likely brush away most of the concealer.

2. Draw A Triangle

When using concealer to hide under-eye circles, most people apply it in a curved line under the eye - but this is actually not the best way to do it. Instead, draw a triangle with concealer, starting under your eye with the tip extending down your cheek. This upside down triangle brightens your entire face, rather than emphasizing the problem area - which the curved line approach can do.

3. Pat Gently

After drawing your triangle, it’s very important that you gently pat the concealer on, instead of rubbing it in. This might seem like a small change, but it makes a world of difference. Rubbing the concealer in can smear the product to other parts of your face, providing less coverage to the targeted area.

4. Blot With A Tissue

Finish your concealer work by using a tissue to blot the entire area. This helps prevent creases and the caked-on look we all try to avoid, because the tissue blocks the concealer from setting entirely in one place and clears away any oil that can smear the concealer. Make sure to use a thin tissue for this step.
