Lip liner can be a magical makeup product that makes lips appear poutier, more defined, and it can even extend the length of your lip color when you use it to fill in your lips prior to lipstick or gloss. Sounds great so far. But, as with any makeup product, application matters. If you’re simply grabbing the first lip liner within reach and lining all around your mouth, Beauty Guru Sandra Goelz has a message: stop doing that!

According to Goelz, this common lip liner mistake can be “aging” you and the solution is actually less work than what you may currently be doing. She demonstrates the wrong way to apply lip liner and the change that makes a “night and day difference.”
Mistake: Lining the Corners of Your Mouth
With lip liner, sometimes it’s a case of “too much of a good thing” just ruins the entire effect you’re after. The goal with liner is to subtly create the illusion of more lip volume and complement your lip color or lipstick. As Goelz explains and shows us, when she applies lip liner to the cupid’s bow (following the exact line of her lip) and then extends it to the corner of her lip, tracing the top and bottom lips with precision, it can make the mouth appear more downturned. This can actually age the look of the mouth. This application technique simply doesn’t add anything to your lips to make them look better.

Correction: Overline a Little and Stop Before the Corners
Goelz shows us a much more effective way to apply lip liner so that it makes an impact on your lips. She overlines the lip just a bit on the cupid’s bow and then follows her natural lip lines on the top and bottom line, but stops short before the corners. This subtle move is all it takes to give the lip a little lift in front, create the look of volume, but keep the ends from turning downward.
